KTTV Anchor Mistakes Basketball for Hockey

Time was a Southern California sports anchor could be forgiven for making a flub while reporting about professional men’s ice hockey. But since the Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2012, the bar has been set much higher.

And while some sports media outlets are skewering KTTV‘s Pablo Pereira for mistakenly telling viewers the Anaheim Ducks traded for Matthew Lombardi from the Phoenix Suns, TVSpy may break all the rules and err on the side of giving the guy a break.

After further review of the tape, let it be noted that Pereira also anchored the weather for the FOX owned station that night, then switched to the other side of the desk, donned a pair of glasses and lead off with the Clippers and Suns game.

For those who don’t follow hockey or basketball, the Suns are an NBA team while the Coyotes are the Phoenix NHL franchise. Lombardi played for the Coyotes.

KNBC anchors Michael Brownlee and Kathy Vara began anchoring coverage just before 9:30amPT. They were joined by Colleen Williams at Griffith Observatory, John Cadiz Klemack in Palmdale, Sean Murphy at the Santa Monica Pier, Ted Chen at Edwards Air Force Base, Toni Guinyard and Chuck Henry at LAX, Patrick Healy at the Nasa Propulsion Center and Antonio Castelan in El Segundo.

KTTV had several anchors participating: Phil Shuman, Carlos Amezcua, Araksya Karapetyan, Lisa Breckenridge and Jeff Michael. Meteorologist Maria Quiban and Pablo Pereira handled the weather reports, and reporters were live across Los Angeles, including Bob DeCastro and Gigi Graciette at LAX, Mar Yvette at a restaurant near LAX and Gina Silva at Griffith Observatory.
