Q3 Earnings: Nexstar Net Revenue Up 40%

nexstar logoNexstar Broadcasting reported $125.8 million in net revenue for the third quarter of 2013, an increase of +39.8% compared to the year-ago quarter.

Local revenues rose +42% and national revenues were up +48% year-over-year. Political revenues were down -90% in the non-election year, but retransmission revenue, digital media revenue and trade and barter revenue were all up for the quarter.

“Since the Company’s initial public offering ten years ago, through accretive acquisitions Nexstar has grown from 42 stations that it owned, operated, programmed and provided services to, and we have consistently enhanced the operating results of acquired stations as reflected by our long-term record of free cash flow growth on a two year cycle,” Nexstar CEO Perry A. Sook said in a statement.

Q3 Earnings: Journal Communications TV Revenue Up 40%

Journal Communications announced revenue from its 15 television stations increased +39.5% in the third quarter of 2012.

Political and issue revenue in the third quarter was $8.6 million and Olympic advertising was $2.7 million, the company said. Core local advertising revenue decreased -3% due to declines in restaurant and home advertising, as well as the displacement impact of political and issue advertising in certain markets. Core national advertising revenue increased +18.2% due to automotive and media advertising.

Journal also completed an agreement this quarter to purchase WTVF in Nashville, which chairman and CEO Steven J. Smith said in a statement “advanced our strategy of adding broadcast assets to the business.”

Meredith Reports 26% Increase in Local Revenue

Meredith Corporation reported a +26% increase in local media group revenues for the fiscal first quarter of 2013, the company announced Thursday.

Net political advertising revenues were $12 million, a record high for a fiscal first quarter. Non-political advertising revenues increased +5%. All of Meredith’s markets grew in both revenues and operating profit.

“We are focused on keeping the momentum going in non-political advertising revenues, along with maximizing our political advertising opportunity this election cycle,” Local Media Group president Paul Karpowicz said in  a statement. Read more

Olympics, Political Ad Spending Boost Gannett TV Revenue to 38% Increase in Q3

Gannett today reported earnings figures for the third quarter of 2012 that included $233 million in television revenues, a +38.1% increase compared to the third quarter of last year.

Revenue growth was driven by $42 million in political ads and $37 million in ads related to the Summer Olympics, according to Gannett. The company also reported retransmission revenues of $22.3 million, an increase of +11.5% this quarter.

“Our TV stations leveraged top 10 ratings positions and a more locally focused sales effort to generate substantially higher Olympic spending,” Gannett president and CEO Gracia Martore said in a statement. “Through strong ratings and a great footprint, they also maximized the opportunity to attract political spending.”
