Ron Oliveira Out at Austin’s KEYE

KEYE evening anchor Ron Oliveira will be leaving the Austin CBS affiliate Friday after station management declined to renew his contract, according to Austin360.

“I was informed that the corporate office in Baltimore decided not to renew my contract,” Oliveira said. “No reason was given. It took me by total surprise. I’m heartbroken because I love what I do.”

While Oliveira told Austin360 KEYE could take first place at 10:00 p.m. this sweeps period, weak ratings at 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. news have plagued the station for years, he said, because of a weak afternoon lead in. Read more

News Director Suzanne Black Resigning from KEYE

Suzanne Black is resigning as news director at KEYE, the CBS-affiliate in Austin.

“I am leaving KEYE. It’s a decision I’ve been weighing for awhile,” she told Austin media blogger Jim McNabb. “As much as I love it here, it’s time to devote some attention to my boys. They’re only young once and I want to enjoy it.”

Black joined KEYE in 2005 as assistant news director and was promoted to news director the following year. Her last day at the station is July 26.

“I will miss the people of KEYE tremendously. They are hard-working, loving, passionate people,” Black said.

KEYE Adding 5 p.m. Newscast to Schedule

KEYE is bringing back the 5 p.m. news.

The Austin CBS-affiliate announced this week that, three years after scrapping news in the time slot, it’s launching a half-hour newscast at 5 p.m.  Anchored by Ron Oliveira and Judy Maggio, with senior reporter Jason Wheeler and chief meteorologist Troy Kimmel, the newscast will debut on June 18th.

“The new 5 p.m. newscast will be a hard news product, bringing Central Texas viewers what they have asked for,” KEYE news director Suzanne Black said, announcing the schedule change. Read more

In Austin, KEYE Scraps Radio Simulcast in Favor of Brand-New Morning Show

After killing its morning newscast in 2009 and replacing it with a simulcast of a local radio show, Austin’s KEYE is set to launch a brand-new morning show this summer.

The CBS-affiliate is modeling the new program after its news and lifestyle show “We Are Austin Live,” which airs weekdays from 4 to 5 p.m. The station describes the new show as “upbeat” and “in-tune with what is happening in and around Austin.”

“We’ve learned how to do different things with ‘Austin Live’ and now we are bringing this energy and creativity to Austin Mornings,” said KEYE news director Suzanne Black about the new show, which will be called “We Are Austin Mornings.”

Erika Gonzalez (above), a multilingual reporter who has anchored newscasts for KEYE’s Telemundo subchannel, has been named host of the new show, with Jason Wheeler and Bettie Cross of “We Are Austin Live” regularly contributing segments.
