KSL Airs Local Show in Place of ‘Playboy Club’

While NBC-affiliates around the country aired the premiere of “The Playboy Club” on Monday night, Salt Lake City’s KSL, which decided months ago to boycott the seemingly racy series, debuted a local show called “We Are Utah.”

“‘We Are Utah’ features the people, places and cultural quirks that make Utah a great place to live,” KSL says.  “We will explore everything Utah, from our bad driving records to our beautiful people and our amazing talents. And we’ll have fun with the cultural quirks that we all recognize and love as we hit the streets, ‘Jaywalking’ style, to figure out why we can’t pronounce ‘Layton.’ We will venture into the streets of Utah, from businesses to schools, trying to make sense of it all.” Read more

KIFI Asks Viewers If Rival Station Should Drop Show

KIFI dedicated a considerable portion of a recent newscast this week reporting on a new primetime show that debuts next month. It wasn’t a case of synergistic self-promotion, though, since KIFI isn’t going to air the show.

No, the ABC-affiliate was covering the coming debut of NBC’s “The Playboy Club,” which will air, naturally, on local NBC-affiliate KPVI. And so goes the growing controversy over the show.

Mentioning that “The Playboy Club”–which is set to premiere September 19th–has already been dropped by Salt Lake City NBC-affiliate KSL, KIFI spoke to a local woman that is trying to get KPVI to follow suit (video here).

The station is also running a survey on its website, asking users if they believe KPVI should drop the show from its fall lineup. So far, nearly half of the respondents are in favor of the NBC-affiliate dropping the show. And on its Facebook page, KIFI has asked users to share their thoughts on whether the show should air or not.

“All I saw was pretty gals in bunny suits,” writes one Facebook commenter. “Whatever.”

More Calls for Boycott of NBC’s ‘Playboy Club’

NBC’s “The Playboy Club” has quickly become the most controversial local news lead-in to come out in recent memory.

The show, which is set to air Mondays at 10/9c, has already been dropped from one NBC-affiliate’s schedule and now its the target of criticism from legendary women’s rights advocate Gloria Steinem as well as the anti-obsenity group Morality in Media.

In a recent interview with Reuters, Steinem, who worked as a Bunny at New York City’s Playboy Club in 1963 for an exposé on the club’s working conditions, said that she hopes people boycott the show.

“It’s just not telling the truth about the era,” she said, pointing out that the real Playboy Club “was not glamorous at all.”

Morality in Media has been an outspoken critic of the show since NBC began promoting it earlier this summer and now the group is circulating a letter to the network’s top advertisers, warning them not to advertise on the show. Read more
