Technical Problems Keep KSTU Off Air for First Half of 9:00 p.m. Newscast

Viewers of Salt Lake City’s FOX affiliate KSTU had to get their news fix elsewhere last night after the station was unable to air the first half of its 9:00 p.m. news.

The station’s anchor team of Hope Woodside and Bob Evans told viewers at the top of the hour the station would not be airing a newscast due to technical problems. “We live by the computer and die by the computer and we’re having computer issues,” said Evans before telling viewers to catch that night’s news online.

All was not lost, though. The station made a comeback at 9:30 p.m. with Evans giving a simple, “Thanks for bearing with us,” as the only nod to the station’s previous problem.

KSTU president and general manager Tim Ermish told the Salt Lake Tribune, the outage was “just a technical malfunction with the news systems. First time it’s happened in 10 years.”

On Facebook, the station also told viewers to watch the news on its website, “Fox 13 News is experiencing technical difficulties. Please stay tuned to Fox13now.com for tonight’s news.”

We’ve asked KSTU for comment and will update when we hear back.

KSTU Ready to Unveil New HD Studio

Salt Lake City Fox-affiliate KSTU is set to debut a brand-new, HD-optimized studio on Monday.

“The project has been 18 months in the making,” KSTU president and general manager Tim Ermish told The Salt Lake Tribune this week.  “When Local TV LLC acquired the station in 2008, they were kind of surprised at what they bought.  They couldn’t believe the cramped space we were working out of.”

In addition to unveiling its new studio, KSTU is also premiering a new 4:30 a.m. newscast on Monday. Read more
