WISH Announces Addition of Two Reporters

kylie-jeffWISH announced the hiring of reporters Kylie Conway and Jeff Wagner, who started at the Indianapolis CBS affiliate Friday.

“Kylie brings a wealth of experience, drive, compassion and talent as a reporter,” said WISH news director Steve Bray. “Likewise, we are thrilled to add someone with the skill set that Jeff brings to the table.”

“I’m excited to call Central Indiana home once again and looking forward to covering stories about my fellow Hoosiers and news that impacts their daily lives,” Conway said in a statement.

Conway, who once interned at WISH, started her career at WKAG in Hopkinsville, KY. She has also worked at WNWO in Toledo, OH, WKEF-WRGT in Dayton, OH, and KTVX in Salt Lake City where she was an evening anchor.

“The Midwest has been a great place to both grow up and grow my career,” said Wagner. “I look forward to starting this new chapter in my life here in Central Indiana.”

Wagner comes to WISH from WCIA in Champaign, IL, where he was the weekend anchor and reporter.

WISH Anchor Debby Knox Announces Retirement

WISH_knox_Debby Knox, anchor for Indianapolis CBS affiliate WISH, has announced her retirement after more than 33 years on air in Indiana.

“It’s been a wonderful opportunity to be part of the community as well as an incredible journey to cover the important events and people over my career at WISH-TV,” Knox said in a statement.

Knox started her career in the South Bend-Ekhart, IN market. According to WISH, she is the “longest running female news anchor in Central Indiana” and is eclipsed for the overall title by former WISH anchor Mike Ahern who retired in 2004.

“It is with mixed emotions that we say so long,” Jeff White, WISH president and general manager, said in a statement. “While we’re sad to see her retire, we’re happy for the next chapter in her life and the additional time she’ll have to spend with her family.”

Knox currently anchors the 6:00, 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. newscasts. The Emmy award winning anchor started anchoring the station’s noon show in 1980. Her last newscast will be November 26.

Former WISH Reporter Rick Dawson Dies

rick dawson Former WISH reporter Rick Dawson has died, the Indianapolis CBS affiliate reports. Dawson was 51.

In his local news career, which included 24 years at WISH, Dawson also worked as a reporter at stations in Fort Wayne, Ind. and Huntington, W. Va. Most recently, he was the news director for WFYI Public Media, according to the Rushville Republican.

“WISH would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to Rick’s family during this difficult time,” the station said in a statement.

WXIN Pokes Fun at Rivals With ‘Only One Angela’ Billboards

Indianapolis Fox affiliate WXIN is taunting their rival stations with tongue-in-cheek billboards in Indianapolis. The ads feature WXIN anchor Angela Ganote along with the text “Only One Angela,” an obvious reference to weathercaster Angela Buchman, who recently jumped from Indianapolis CBS affiliate WISH to NBC affiliate WTHR. The Indianapolis Business Journal has details:

Every couch potato knows Fox59 is poking fun at WTHR-TV Channel 13’s Angela Buchman. The popular weather prognosticator returned to the air early this month following a yearlong noncompete period from her contract with former employer WISH-TV Channel 8.

[...] “Why, I don’t know what you mean,” said Michael Brouder, WXIN’s director of creative services. Brouder’s not fooling anyone. “It was done with tongue firmly planted in cheek,” he confessed. “If you know about the local news market, you would certainly get it.”

WISH Adds 30 Minutes to Morning Newscast

Indianapolis CBS affiliate WISH has expanded its morning newscast, moving the broadcast’s start time up to 4:30 a.m.

“We have seen an increase in viewers’ desire for earlier news, so we wanted to deliver our great Daybreak news product to that audience,” WISH news director Steve Bray said in a statement. “From bringing viewers up-to-date on overnight news, and breaking news, weather and traffic; our team works hard to get our viewers ready for their day ahead with all the information they need.”

The weekday morning newscasts are anchored by Scott Sander and Lauren Lowrey, with meteorologist Randy Ollis and traffic reporter Julie Patterson. The newscasts now air from 4:30 to 7 a.m. on WISH and 7 to 8 a.m. on sister station WNDY, Indianapolis’ MyNetworkTV affiliate.

WISH Names Assistant News Director

WISH, the LIN owned Indianapolis CBS affiliate, has announced Jeff Mulligan as assistant news director.

“I’m looking forward to joining the 24-Hour News 8 team,” said Mulligan in a statement.  “I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work serving the viewers of Central Indiana.”

Mulligan joins WISH from KFVS in Cape Girardeau, MO where is the assistant news director. Before working for KFVS, Mulligan was executive producer for WDAF in Kansas City, MO. He started his career at WTWO in Terre Haute, IN.

As Angela Buchman’s Debut Nears, Chief Meteorologist Chris Wright to Exit WTHR

Chief meteorologist Chris Wright is leaving WTHR, Dispatch Broadcast Group’s NBC affiliate in Indianapolis.

Wright’s exit comes as the station prepares for the September arrival of Angela Buchman, who joins WTHR from rival WISH after sitting out a yearlong non-compete clause in her contract. Wright told NewsBlues that WTHR offered him “a huge pay cut and a reduced role” and said he would “go try to catch on somewhere else.”

“Despite our efforts and wanting him to remain at WTHR, Chris has chosen to look for other opportunities,” Dispatch vice president of news John Cardenas told the Indianapolis Star.

WTHR has yet to respond to TVSpy’s request for comment.

Lori Wilson Joins WISH as Anchor

WISH has announced Lori Wilson will join the Indianapolis CBS affiliate in mid-June as an anchor and reporter.

“Lori has built a solid career filled with many examples of quality journalism both reporting out on the street and behind the anchor desk,” said WISH news director Steve Bray. “We are thrilled to welcome her home to Central Indiana and to our 24-Hour News 8 team.”

In addition to anchoring the 5:00 p.m. news, Wilson will also report live during the station’s 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. news. Read more

Mike Lopez Named News Director at WEAU

Mike Lopez is the new news director at WEAU in Eau Claire, Wisc., the station confirmed to TVSpy.

Lopez joins the NBC affiliate from WVEC in Norfolk, where he was the assistant news director for seven years. He has also worked as an executive producer at WAVY in Norfolk and WISH in Indianapolis and as a producer at KRON in San Franscisco.

Lopez, who started earlier this month, replaces Eric Shepard.

Meteorologist Robb Ellis Joins WISH

Indianapolis CBS affiliate WISH has announced Robb Ellis will join the station as its evening meteorologist.

“Robb brings a wealth of meteorological experience, especially in severe weather coverage. He has passion for the science and understanding of the changing dynamics of weather that is Central Indiana,” said news director Steve Bray. “Robb has experience both as a researcher and scientist in climatology and as an on-air meteorologist. This background not only ensures Hoosiers an accurate forecast, but a dedication to their safety in times of severe weather.”

Ellis, who comes to WISH from WECT-WSFX in Wilmington, NC, will serve as meteorologist for the station’s 5:00, 6:00, 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. newscasts. Read more
