BET’s Hot Ghetto Mess

BET’s controversial Charlie Murphy-hosted comedy series Hot Ghetto Mess just got a name change. Now retitled We Got To Do Better, it has been sharply criticized, as has the Web site it was based on. Newsweek offers a rundown on what the controversy is all about:

BET’s programming president Reginald Hudlin insists that the show is not a literal translation of the Web site, which is basically an expansive gallery of gold teeth, neon wigs and oversize thong models that could easily be called “Blacks Wear the Darnedest Things.

Making fun of the poor on TV? Awesome. Although BET is now backtracking on the show’s title, their cached site for Hot Ghetto Mess is still available. As per BET’s description, it’s an “entertaining, tongue-in-cheek examination” of “shaking booties, thug life, baby-mama drama and pimped out high schoolers.” Nope, can’t see why a show like that would spark boycott campaigns and scare off advertisers. Nope, not at all.
