AP Video Journalist, Freelance Translator Killed in Gaza (FishbowlNY)
Simone Camilli and Ali Shehda Abu Afash — an Associated Press video journalist and a freelance translator, respectively — were killed in Gaza Wednesday while covering the conflict there. TVNewser Camilli, an Italian national, and Abu Afash, his Palestinian translator, were killed after ordnance left over from fighting in Gaza exploded. Following the news, AP president Gary Pruitt sent a note to the AP’s global staff about the dangers of their work. Associated Press / The Big Story Police said three police engineers also were killed. Four people, including AP photographer Hatem Moussa, were badly injured. Moussa told a colleague that they were filming the scene when an initial explosion went off. He said he was hit by shrapnel and began to run when there was a second blast, which knocked him out. He woke up in a hospital and later underwent surgery. NYT Camilli, 35, a video journalist based in Beirut, Lebanon, who started as an intern at The AP in 2005, was the first international journalist killed in the latest Gaza conflict. Abu Afash, 36, helped train local journalists through the Doha Center for Media Freedom and worked regularly with visiting foreign correspondents. BBC News The incident happened in the town of Beit Lahiya, in the north of the Gaza Strip. It came hours before a three-day ceasefire agreed between Israel and the Palestinians was due to expire. Some 2,000 people have died since the fighting in Gaza began on July 8. Those killed include more than 1,900 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the UN.
7.2 Million Watch 20/20 Robin Williams Special (TVNewser)
According to Nielsen overnight ratings, the ABC News 20/20 special The Life And Death of Robin Williams was watched by 7.18 million viewers, making it the No. 2 TV show of the night, and in the time period, behind NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Deadline Hollywood Featuring interviews with the actor by Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer plus the latest news on the investigation into Williams’ death, the one-hour special was hosted by David Muir. Compared to ABC’s last primetime 20/20 special, the June 9 Hillary Clinton interview, Tuesday night’s Williams tribute was up 56 percent among adults 18-49. Variety The network had been averaging about 3 million viewers in the Tuesday-at-10 hour with its regular programming this summer (Celebrity Wife Swap). Cable numbers for Tuesday weren’t available early Wednesday, but Monday saw a significant spike in viewership, especially among adults 25-54. A combined 1.465 million adults 25-54 were watching during any given primetime minute on either Fox News Channel (574,000), CNN (568,000), MSNBC (180,000) or HLN (143,000), a 77 percent spike from the previous week’s 826,000; CNN saw the biggest surge, more than tripling its week-ago Monday average. NYT’s Rubin ‘in Stable Condition’ After Crash (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media)
Alissa Rubin, the New York Times’ Paris bureau chief who was injured in a helicopter crash in northern Iraq on Tuesday, is “in stable condition” at the American hospital in Istanbul, executive editor Dean Baquet informed staff on Wednesday. HuffPost / AP An Iraqi military helicopter providing aid to people stranded on a mountain fleeing Sunni militants crashed on Tuesday, killing the pilot and injuring several people on board, including Rubin, who was inside the helicopter for a story. Baquet told the newsroom that Rubin is now in the intensive care unit in Istanbul. Wired’s Edward Snowden Cover Shows Him Holding The American Flag (HuffPost)
Edward Snowden’s latest media move is perhaps one of his most provocative. The whistleblower gave a lengthy interview to Wired magazine, which also brought famed photographer Platon to Moscow to take pictures of him. The picture that wound up on the cover shows Snowden holding the American flag. Politico In the story, Snowden describes to reporter James Bamford an NSA program called MonsterMind, designed to prevent foreign cyberattacks and automatically fire back at the source of those attacks, without any human action. He argues the program could also be the biggest invasion of privacy known. “You could have someone sitting in China, for example, making it appear that one of these attacks is originating in Russia. And then we end up shooting back at a Russian hospital. What happens next?” he asks. Slate / Future Tense Snowden also claimed that in 2012, the NSA’s TAO hacking group was attempting to install surveillance malware when it accidentally brought down a crucial router at a Syrian Internet service provider, and the nation’s Internet connectivity with it. At the time, observers speculated that the Bashar al-Assad regime was behind the blackout, which could still be true of other outages that have occurred.
Radio Disney Moving Off Air to Digital (B&C)
The Walt Disney Co. is looking to sell 23 more radio stations and move its Radio Disney kids programming exclusively to digital distribution. The shift comes because young viewers have adopted satellite radio and online platforms when listening to music and other programming. THR Disney is selling 22 AM and one FM station in markets covering more than 42 percent of the U.S., including stations in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Seattle, San Francisco, Boston, Houston, Miami, Denver, Indianapolis and Minneapolis. TheWrap As part of the changes, 184 positions (about eight per unloaded station) will be eliminated at the local level and in ad sales and operations, effective Sept. 26. The company will be keeping its flagship station and studio, KDIS-AM 1110 in Los Angeles, which will drive its national network programming and provide content to partners moving forward. Its operations will be picked up by the national team.

Yahoo! has hired Michele Promaulayko and Katie Brown as editors of Yahoo! Health and Yahoo! DIY, respectively. Adweek Promaulayko has been the editor of Rodale-owned Women’s Health for five years. Under her leadership, Women’s Health grew digitally and in print and won some of the magazine industry’s highest awards, including a National Magazine Award for General Excellence. The 1.5 million circulation magazine has also managed to maintained strong single-copy sales, which rose 3.3 percent in the first half of 2014, even as much of the women’s category continued to struggle on the newsstand. In announcing Deadline’s first-ever website revamp Wednesday, TV editor Nellie Andreeva says the move was largely motivated by the now-familiar refrain of a cresting base of mobile-device users. SeaWorld Finally Confirms A Blackfish Backlash to Investors (PRNewser)
SeaWorld has been very insistent in its messaging since CNN’s Blackfish expose surfaced, with variations on “The documentary is skewed and it will not affect our business in any way.” Wednesday, however, the company officially changed its tune in a telling press release. WSJ Shares of SeaWorld — down 22 percent in the past year through Tuesday — lost about a third of their value Wednesday. “The company believes attendance in the quarter was impacted by demand pressures related to recent media attention surrounding proposed legislation in the state of California,” SeaWorld said in its earnings release.
i-D Writer Dismissed After Plagiarism Charge (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media)
Vice Media has dismissed i-D writer Jack Borkett after he posted an item about Lauren Bacall that lifted the title and portions of text from a New York Magazine article, a spokesperson said. i-D had removed Borkett’s post after determining that it “had too many similarities to a recent post by New York Magazine‘s The Cut.”

Susan Mercandetti is leaving ABC News to start her own media consulting company. Mercandetti has had two stints at ABC. She returned in April 2011 as VP of business development. Mercandetti has already lined up Disney/ABC, Univision and Fusion as her first clients, says Disney/ABC TV president Ben Sherwood.
