It’s Time to Admit It: Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin are a Classic Comedy Duo

The medium of television and the sensibilities of comedy are vastly different today than they were during the runs of such gold-standard bearers as Mike Nichols and Elaine May, George Burns and Gracie Allen or Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. So just to preface this for comedy purists; we would never suggest that a 21st century couple, atop today’s fractured media landscape, could ever lay claim to that kind of titanic yucks aura.

GriffinCooperNYEHowever… As a sign of just how much we have come to love the NYE shenanigans of one Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper, FishbowlNY has no trouble admitting that we DVR-ed the entire thing December 31 and watched the entire thing January 1. And enjoyed every minute of it.

This year’s seventh go-round (by Cooper’s count) or eighth (by Griffin’s) ranks as the best so far. Largely because, after a couple of borderline years, Griffin seems to have finally read the contractual fine print and figured out more nimbly than ever how to straddle the Times Square barrier.

One of the highlights of Cooper-Griffin 2013 was when she launched into the first of several recurring bits mocking her co-host’s banal tweets and starved-for-attention Twitter M.O. Cooper was literally doubled over with laughter as Griffin put on her therapist party hat:

“Why do you read every single [reply] tweet?”

“I know the hurt little boy who lives inside the model body. He’s five-years-old. Mommy’s missing, she’s at Studio 54. His soup is cold… And all he wants is love. So he’s reading every, single tweet…”

Jane Fonda Accepts LA Press Club’s Inaugural Visionary Award

When NBC LA anchorman and reporter Robert Kovacik recently reminded on his Facebook page that he would be interviewing actress Jane Fonda as part of the Los Angeles Press Club’s 5th Annual National Entertainment Journalism Awards, held last night at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, the first comment he received came from a female resident of Malibu:

No offense to you Robert, but I feel very strongly that Jane Fonda is a lying b*tch who betrayed our nation. Ask her if she did indeed hand over to the VC the notes that the American POWs gave to her. They died a brutal death because of her traitorous actions. Shame on her.

Strong words, perhaps too strong. But Fonda is well aware of this specter. Last night during her Q&A with Kovacik, here’s how the worthy LAPC Visionary Award recipient answered when he asked about her biggest life regret:

“Sitting on that gun in North Vietnam. I’ll go to my grave with that one.”

The remark has been quickly pounced on this morning at Breitbart.com, The Daily Caller and elsewhere.

Kathy Griffin Lands a Weekly Talk Show

Two-time Emmy winner Kathy Griffin has landed herself a new weekly one-hour talk show on Bravo. Kathy, as the show will be called, will air Thursdays beginning on April 19.

“Look, I’ve called Academy Award winners a-holes and shown the world my awesome 51 year-old boobs, so I asked myself, what else is there to do,” Griffin says in the release.  ”I’m a true original. A snowflake! Time for a talk show, of course!”

For some reason we were hoping the show would run in the daytime. Because it would be hilarious to see Griffin go head-to-head with The View. Alas, the show will air once-a-week at 10 pm.

Crying Foul Over Kathy Griffin’s Latest Grammy Nomination

A couple of years ago, the Recording Academy loosened eligibility rules for the category of Best Comedy Album. It’s OK now for the soundtrack of a TV program to be considered an “album.”

It’s only because of this rule change that Kathy Griffin is in the running again this weekend with 50 & Not Pregnant, a product put out by Universal Network Television. That does not sit well with Dylan P. Gadino, editor of Laughspin.com. He recently told LA Times reporter Deborah Vankin that Griffin does not belong in the category for a fourth straight year:

“You shouldn’t be able to take audio from a television show and call it a comedy album,” says Gadino. “Original intent, editing and production should come into play.”

Kathy Griffin Lands Bravo Talk Show

Kathy Griffin is expanding her presence on Bravo as the comedian will host a weekly one-hour talk show starting in the spring titled Kathy.

The network made the announcement Saturday at the 2012 Winter TCA Tour. According to Bravo, Kathy will be “the destination to get Griffin’s thoughts on everything pop culture as she rants on the week’s biggest headlines and tabloid gossip.”

For Bravo, this is the latest go-round in the talk-show world. Earlier this month, Andy Cohen‘s Watch What Happens Live expanded from once a week to five nights a week.

Australian Comic Rove McManus Brings Talk Show Act to LA

On Monday, September 19, popular Australian TV personality Rove McManus will debut a new season of his talk show program under the localized banner Rove LA. Per the promo below, the Fox8 gabfest looks to have some pretty funny comedy bits to go along with the chit chat (think Botox):

Episode One, which was taped this week, features Lisa Kudrow, Kathy Griffin and Entourage‘s Jerry Ferrara. And though it probably meant nothing while he was here, McManus is a “three-time Gold Logie Award winner.”

schwartzenegger_engstrom008-copy-300x205.jpgHold the lame duck jokes, kids, Arnold Schwarzenegger will make the opening statement at LA Press Club’s annual awards gala. Yes, Ah-nold and Kathy Griffin will attend. This is a weird business in a weird town during a weird time and the LA Press Club’s line-up fully represents that.

From their release:

America’s most famous immigrant, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, joins Haiti recovery activist and Oscar winner Sean Penn and outrageously hilarious comedian Kathy Griffin in honoring CNN anchor Anderson Cooper at the LA Press Club’s Journalism Awards Gala, June 27 in the Crystal Room of the Biltmore Hotel.
