TV news organizations are gearing up for covering Sandy. There is still lots of uncertainty but here is what we know so far. We will update this story as we get more information.
Cable:
The Weather Channel not surprisingly, has a slew of coverage planned. “Wake Up With Al” will air this weekend starting at 5:30 AM, and 5 AM starting next week.

Another viral video has made it to the mainstream media.
TVSpy has the video of Ted Williams, a down-on-his luck man from Columbus, OH who has been using his God-given gift — his voice — to earn money on the side of the road. Not long after the video hit the internet, TV networks began making calls trying to reel in an exclusive interview with him.
Crews from both CBS’ “The Early Show” and NBC’s “Today” show were waiting to interview Williams at radio station WNCI in Columbus, where Williams also did an interview this morning. TVNewser has learned negotiations between producers and Williams’ representative went into the night and in the end “The Early Show” got the first interview.
But that doesn’t mean NBC News has given up…
The rescued Chilean miners are beginning to talk to U.S. TV networks, which means the payments in the form of licensing agreements have begun. NBC’s Natalie Morales, who arrived in Chile more than a week ago, got interviews over the weekend with two of the rescued miners, Carlos Barrios and Victor Zamora, 13th and 14th out of the mine.
TVNewser has learned NBC News paid a licensing fee for videos Zamora and Barrios took from inside the capsule as it ascended to the surface. The network also paid for video from Zamora’s 34th birthday party celebrated by his family in his absence. (video after the jump). Morales mentioned the licensing agreement in the on-camera tag of her live report on “Today.”
ABC News paid a licensing fee for video of second rescued miner “Super” Mario Sepulveda — both in the hospital and at his home. Correspondent John Quinones, conducted the interview from New York over the weekend, an hour after Sepulveda was released from the hospital. In his piece, Quinones mentions the network had licensed home video of Sepulveda at his home. ABC News cameras then followed Sepulveda to the beach where he jumped into the ocean — sans clothes — and prayed on the beach with his son.
CBS News correspondent Seth Doane briefly interviewed one of the miners, but CBS News tells us they are not entering into any licensing deals with the miners.
So how much did NBC and ABC pay?
TV News correspondents are descending on Chile’s Atacama desert as the rescue of 33 miners trapped since August 5 is now just days away.
“Today” show national correspondent Natalie Morales left New York for Chile on Friday and began reporting today for NBC News and The Weather Channel. NBC News Miami-based correspondent Kerry Sanders, (with Morales, right) who has been in Chile since Sept. 28, has been reporting for several NBCU channels, including MSNBC and CNBC.
ABC’s Jeffrey Kofman who was one of the first American news correspondents on the scene in August, remains on site. John Quinones is also there working on a report for “20/20″ to air this Friday and Diana Alvear is reporting for NewsOne and ABC News Radio.
For CBS News, Seth Doane is in place. Fox News Channel’s Steve Harrigan has been in-country since last Tuesday reporting for the cable news channel and CNN has a team of 14 people on the ground including Karl Penhaul who’s been on the ground since August 23 for both CNN/U.S. and CNNI. All-platform journalist Patrick Oppmann is also reporting for the network and Gary Tuchman will be on air soon as he just arrived this morning.
BBC World News America’s Matt Frei will anchor tonight’s show from the scene in Copiago and will remain until the miners are freed.
TV News crews in position near the mine site in Chile’s Atacama Desert where rescuers finished drilling 566 meters underground Sunday in an effort to free 33 trapped miners.

For the second year in a row, the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric has won the Edward R. Murrow award for best evening newscast. CBS News submitted the broadcast of Nov. 12, 2008 to the RTNDA judges. The program led with the economic bailout coverage from correspondents Anthony Mason and Sharyl Attkisson. Other reports came from Armen Keteyian, Seth Doane, Mark Strassmann, and Steve Hartman.

CBS News has announced the hiring of Seth Doane, most recently a New Delhi-based correspondent for CNN International. President of CBS News & Sports, Sean McManus calls Doane “one of the most impressive young reporters working today.” “Seth further strengthens what has developed into a very strong corps of ‘next generation’ CBS News correspondents,” McManus said. Doane will be based in New York.
