First Facebook swoops in and steals Instagram away from Twitter and then it hijacks Twitter’s hashtag and now it’s targeting the blue tick – THE BLUE TICK!

Stay calm.

We expect it will re-envision groups as chat rooms some time in the future and start wearing similar clothes and other Single White Female-style things.

With the alleged goal of “helping users identify authentic accounts” (because who would cop to stalker mentality?), Facebook announced today that it is, just like Twitter, is now offering verified profiles and pages. And EXACTLY like Twitter, it is doing so by adding a blue tick next to people/page names. Go ahead and try to label that anything short of creepy, we dare you.¬†

Here’s how it looks:

But don’t look for your own blue tick, because you won’t be getting one any time soon. “Verified Pages belong to a small group of prominent public figures (celebrities, journalists,¬†government officials, popular brands and businesses) with large audiences.”

Sigh, another popularity contest for the tech kids.

FYI – You’ll know who has been verified on Facebook because the humblebragging is in full effect. No, you’re bitter.
