Snapchat’s New Security Feature ‘Find the Ghost’ Fails Almost Instantly

snap-tchaSnapchat’s security issues are aplenty, and the latest attempt to keep out the robots with the app’s mascot ghost was no real deterrent for hackers. The app introduced the new feature on Wednesday – users had to select illustrations with the ghost mascot in order to proceed as a real person. Unfortunately, since the ghost is a repeating image with no real geometrical changes, a simple image detection hack took a developer less than one hour to crack.

Snapchat Finally Apologizes for Security Leak, Introduces Opt Out Option

snapchatIn a much belated blog post, Snapchat finally apologizes for the large security breach of the app, which left 4.6 million usernames and numbers accessible for hackers to find and distribute.

The software company first acknowledged the data leak during an announcement on January 2, 2014, but offered not so much as an apology, but an I told you so. In that same blog post, the company admitted to knowing about a report detailing the Find Friend security flaw in August of 2013 – a finding that should have alerted the company to potential hacks, and subsequent changes.

4.6 Million Snapchat Accounts Exposed

snapchatHackers gained access to nearly 5 million Snapchat accounts, posting their usernames and phone numbers to the web New Year’s Eve, according to several reports.

The hackers, identified only by the website name — SnapchatDB.info — told the media they were motivated to publish the file of 4.6 million users’ private information as a way to bring attention to known security flaws in the popular app. They also said that they had kept the last two numbers of each phone number hidden. 70% of All Snapchat Users are Women

A surprising large percentage of Snapchat users are female – 70% in fact. Snapchat’s CEO,Evan Spiegel, presented this interesting fact about its userbase during Goldman Sach’s closed conference in Vega on Wednesday.  He also disclosed that users were sending 400 million ‘snaps’ every day , compared to Facebook’s 350 million

Snapchat Photo Messanging App Adds Video Feature

You can now record and send short 10 second video clips using Snapchat, a photo messanging app. The video functions like Snapchat photos where recipients will be able to view the video only once before the video disappears forever. The disappearing file feature helps to encourage users who are typically camera shy.

The new video features also comes with new “friending” process wherein users must be friends before receiving and sending messages to one another. Critics of Snapchat beleives the nature of the program makes it susceptible to sexting though the founder cites that  “It doesn’t seem that fun when you can have real sex.”  Read more
