Where in the World is Tim Pawlenty?

Remember Tim Pawlenty? Yeah, neither do I. Apparently, he ran for President or something. Luckily, for all of us who forgot about him, Buzzfeed’s McKay Coppins is here to bring us up to speed on the failed candidate. Coppins caught up with Pawlenty in Aspen for the “Aspen Ideas Festival” recently and reports that he looked  ”tanned and prosperous.” Coincidentally, that may be the only time anyone has ever been described as looking “tanned and prosperous.”

There’s a lot to catch up on with T-Paw. He tells Coppins that he’s not running for President again. (Hey, I don’t blame him.) He doesn’t have to worry about looking like “the everyman” anymore. He can now sit as CEO of a a big trade association, probably watch over his hedge funds and build car elevators in his garage. (Hey, it could happen.)

In other words, Pawlenty can, as Lenny Bruce once said, “grow up and sell out.”  Read more

What’s On Your iPod John Stanton?

We’re starting a new series here in the Fishbowl where we catch up with some of your favorite journos to find out what they listen to. The game is simple. Turn on your iPod, put it on shuffle, and tell us the First 5 songs that play. We’re going on the honor system, so if Taylor Swift song pops up, you HAVE to tell us. Ready to play?

Our first subject is a man whose musical tastes are well-known in D.C: Buzzfeed’s Washington Bureau Chief, John Stanton. Stanton’s twitter avi is the cover of the first album by Bad Brains, so you know we’ll get some interesting stuff from him.

Naturally Stanton delivered. Check out his shuffle. Read more

Separated at Birth: Buzzfeed’s Benny Johnson

Not long ago, Buzzfeed’s Benny Johnson put together a wonderful list featuring members of Congress and their animal lookalikes. While we don’t have a list of “30 Animals That Look Like Benny Johnson,” we did find one potential clone. Comedian Greg Proops was in town earlier this week to perform and tape his podcast at the DC Improv. We caught up with him at the “Lamb Jam” food event at Eastern Market on Monday night. He was wearing a green, flannel suit and, with the rising temps, told us that he was “fucking hot.” Maybe it’s the sharp outfits or the glasses, but we think the two could be brothers from another mother.

The Latest, More Serious, Round of Buzzfeed Brews

On Monday night, Buzzfeed’s Bureau Chief John Stanton sat down with Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH). At the event, there were rumors flying that a bigger, more involved event was in the works. More involved? What, no GIFS or listicles? On Thursday, we found out the details.

On May 14 at the Liaison Hotel will be The BuzzFeed Brews Special Edition: Immigration Summit. It’s a more serious panel discussion on immigration that will be moderated by Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith.

House of Cards Cast Parties at Buzzfeed BBQ

Once the actual White House Correspondents Dinner was over, a swarm of people descended upon the Jack Rose Dining Saloon for the Buzzfeed BBQ after-party. No crowd drew more attention than the cast of Netflix’s House of Cards, who made their way down Florida Ave. (Kevin Spacey was noticeably absent.)

As they arrived at the front door, Robin Wright-Penn decided to take her high heels off. After slipping one off, she struggled with the other undone, so rolled into the party with only one shoe on. A brave choice considering the raucous atmosphere inside the soirée.

As soon as they entered, the House of Cards crew was offered a spot in the VIP area and they all said, “No, we want to dance!”

More from the party…

Buzzfeed Turns The Tables on WHCD

With the White House Correspondents Dinner a little over a week away, most news outlets have made their plans. They’ve invited guests, scored party invites and rented tuxes. One outlet that won’t be representing at the annual nerd prom is Buzzfeed. Despite their application for tables, the WHCD has denied them tables at this year’s event. We have to wonder if WHCD President Ed Henry has turned this into a personal squabble. Buzzfeed’s Michael Hastings wrote about his dislike of Henry in his book. We wrote about that here. Maybe Henry is a little touchy with his tables?

Despite the snub, Buzzfeed is turning WHCD lemons into lemonade. They are throwing their own “BBQ with Buzzfeed” DURING the Correspondents Dinner. It’s a ballsy move that will allow folks without tickets to the actual dinner to party with Buzzfeed. We hear the entire NY based Politics team, including founder Jonah Peretti, is making the trek.

Marty’d: The Michelle Fields Edition

There are few things on the Internet that are as delightful as Marty Rudolf. The Twitter icon fishes for conversation with people from all walks of life, and every now and then, he gets a response. The more entertaining exchanges make it into our feature we like to call, “Marty’d.”

One recent example was when Marty asked Buzzfeed’s DC Bureau Chief, John Stanton, “Hello John, Describe what it’s like Being the DC Bureau Chief at Buzzfeed.com? I’m a Political News Junkie Online!” Stanton took the time to reply that it was “loads of fun,” even when he has to edit Evan McMorris-Santoro.

But it was a recent conversation with a Fishbowl Favorite that really caught our attention.  Read more

Journos Hash It Out on Twitter

On Tuesday afternoon, Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski tweeted a possible new idea for a TV show. He tweeted, “I think we should give Bristol Palin and Meghan McCain a reality TV show and call it McCain-Palin.” That’s actually not a terrible idea. I might actually watch. It couldn’t be any worse than “Sarah Palin’s Alaska.”

Not everyone thought it was such a good idea. Meghan McCain took to Twitter to confront Kaczynski. She tweeted, “you’re gonna live to regret underestimating me.” Uh oh. Could this be a possible smack down brewing over McCain’s upcoming TV show on new cable channel, Pivot?

Well, not exactly. Read more

What’s Stanton Tweeting?

We spend a lot of time knocking people around for their dumb activities on Twitter. Today is different. Stand back everyone, we’re about to get positive. We’ve found that no one captures the spirit of this effed-up city better than Buzzfeed’s Washington Bureau Chief, John Stanton. Stanton spends his time tweeting about work, music and the shit he sees wandering around Washington, D.C.

For example, Friday morning, he spotted some lovebirds on his way to work and gave them advice. “Dear nasty couple with your tongues down each others throats on the metro: it’s too damn early and unsanitary for that trifflin nonsense.” See? That’s a true public service.

Stanton also live-tweeted the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday evening. When Syracuse’s basketball team, long-time rival of hometown Georgetown, were playing, Stanton let his true feelings known about their head coach, Jim Boeheim. He tweeted, “If I could lock Jim Boeheim in a room with a syphilitic yak, I totally would.” Just think if we could do that with certain members of Congress! We might get something done every once in a while.

Stanton has travel tips for tourists. Read more
