(Video) Staying ‘Fresh’ in Mornings with Jim and Kim at WWFS

Morning team Jim and Kim at the WWFS studios

Jim Douglas and Kim Berk, or simply Jim and Kim, are the morning hosts at CBS’ Fresh 102.7/WWFS. The duo has been together on the wake-up shift for 11 years. In October, it will be three years for Jim and Kim at Fresh, after a long stint at Long Island’s KJOY/WKJY.

However, October is a million miles away. Just last week we reported that Fresh may become an FM simulcast of WFAN.

But before the rumors took flight for the male-dominated station uprooted at 102.7, FishbowlNY visited recently with the early risers.

One thing is clear, they enjoy each other’s company immensely, and bring that dynamic to the air each day.

“We get along tremendously well off the air,” Douglas says. “I think you can hear that on the air.”

“After so many years together, it just works,” Berk laughs. “It works if he lets me do whatever I want to do.”

“And she let me let her do anything that she wants,” Douglas cracks.

Off air, though, Berk says despite being great friends, they don’t socialize much.

“It keeps the show fresh,” Berk contends.

Signs in Air for WFAN to Make FM Jump

Coming off its silver anniversary celebration, WFAN, the most powerful all-sports station in America, may be positioning itself for a dramatic dial switch to FM.

Several factors are at play for WFAN to make that leap of frequency: First and foremost is last month’s announcement that CBS Sports Radio is being created. Original 24-hour programming will air on stations throughout the country starting in January. But as early as September, CBS Sports Radio will provide updates to affiliated stations.

One of those stations poised to take some of the network content is WFAN. Operations manager Mark Chernoff remains steadfast in the future of 660 AM.

“WFAN is locally programmed, no change.”

But there is much more to this story.

Karen Carson Officially Gets Fresh/WWFS Midday Shift

Updating a story we reported earlier this week, CBS Radio made it official yesterday hiring veteran DJ Karen Carson at WWFS/Fresh 102.7.

Carson takes over the midday shift (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) vacated by Heather Walters who left the station last week.

Carson starts at Fresh on February 7.

She comes to Fresh after many years at WLTW/Lite FM. At her most recent stint with the Clear Channel powerhouse, Carson was co-host of the morning show from 2007 to 2009.

“I am thrilled to become a part of CBS Radio and the team at Fresh.  I am even more thrilled to be working once again for program director Jim Ryan,” Carson said in a statement, “He has given me more opportunities in New York Radio than anyone and he is great to work for.  I love his vision for Fresh and can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Karen Carson Reportedly Leaving ‘Lite’ for ‘Fresh’

Veteran New York DJ Karen Carson has reportedly left her on-air position with WLTW/Lite FM. Radio-info.com reports Carson is joining WWFS-FM/Fresh 102.7.

It marks a reunion for Carson and her former Lite FM boss Jim Ryan, now the program director at Fresh.

FishbowlNY attempted to reach Ryan for a comment.

Carson has been a mainstay at Lite FM since 1996. The accomplished voice-over artist has also done shifts at Classic Rocker WAXQ/Q104.3  and middays at the former “Big 105.1″/WBIX.

In 2009, Carson began splitting her time between New York and Los Angeles when she was named midday host at KOST.(She is still listed on their website.)

Last week, Heather Walters left her midday shift at Fresh.

Famed Long Island Jock ‘Malibu’ Sue Finally Reaches New York Airwaves at Fresh 102.7/WWFS

We told you last month about veteran DJ ”Malibu” Sue McCann being let go at WMJC.

McCann, a staple on Long Island radio for more than two decades, has cracked the New York market for the first time in her career.

Since Thanksgiving, and continuing throughout the holidays, McCann is handling shifts at CBS-owned Fresh 102.7/WWFS.

She tells FishbowlNY that Fresh has been keeping her busy as a fill-in air personality at the Adult Contemporary station.

Fans of McCann can hear her all next week. The veteran jock is doing the midday shift (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) Monday through Wednesday, followed by afternoons (3 p.m. to 8 p.m.) Thursday and New Years Eve.

In an interview with FishbowlNY in November, McCann recalled how close she came to landing work in New York City. In 1995, she was hired as a part-time DJ at WAXQ/Q 104.3. Stuck in the middle of new management, McCann was never heard on the air at the station.
