Population growth of about 2.5%--among the highest in Southeast Asia--prompted the government of Lao PDR to partner with two non-governmental organizations (NGOs): the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). Together these partners created a national rice research system in Lao PDR. They also worked together to preserve precious germplasm for rice varieties that are indigenous to the Lao region. This publication summarizes the many achievements of these efforts.
