After two years as assistant managing editor of Fortune's tech supplement, I segued into travel writing. When I realized that I only traveled to eat, and that it was cheaper to go to the Lebanese grocery down my block in Queens than to buy a ticket to Beirut, I stayed put and focused on food writing and working in restaurant kitchens to build my cooking skills.
