DreamWorks to Launch Children’s Books Imprint

DreamWorksDreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. will launch its own children’s books imprint called DreamWorks Press. Emma Whittard has been selected to run this new publishing venture.

The imprint’s list will focus on titles based on the movie studio’s popular properties including Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar. In the past, DreamWorks had licensed several of these properties to traditional book publishers. Prior to the launch, the organizers had to work on recovering the rights.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg explained that “the last 18 months have been about expansion and diversification. Reading with a child is still a cherished experience. And giving kids e-books with interactive elements has shown itself to be a growth business in publishing.” What do you think?

Hilary Knight Chronicles ‘Girls’ Set Visit With Sketches

girlsHave you ever wanted to meet the cast of Girls?

Eloise series illustrator Hilary Knight spent some time at the TV show set. He secured this invitation by her a signed set of books to actress Lena Dunham  after learning that she has an Eloise tattoo on her back.

Vanity Fair reports that Knight chronicled the experience by sketching various moments throughout the day. Some of the moments he captured included seeing “a young fan admiring Dunham’s new ink” and witnessing a deliveryman bring the cast and crew lunch at Silvecup Studios. What do you think?

HarperCollins to Release ‘The Giving Tree’ in eBook Format

9780060256654HarperCollins will publish an eBook edition of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein on February 18th.

This release marks the first time a Silverstein title was released as a digital book. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Silverstein “never allowed paperback editions of his books.”

The publisher organized this to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the publication of this iconic children’s book. How will you be celebrating this momentous occasion?

NY Historical Society to Host the ‘Madeline in New York’ Exhibit

9780670445806HThe New York Historical Society will host an exhibition called “Madeline in New York: The Art of Ludwig Bemelmans.”

This art show was organized to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the publication of the first Madeline picture book. It will open on July 04, 2014 and close on October 13, 2014.

Visitors will see more than 90 original art pieces. This exhibit will showcase illustrations from all the books in the Madeline series as well as ”Bemelmans’ drawings of the old Ritz Hotel in New York, murals from a rediscovered Paris bistro, panels from the Onassis yacht, and a cache of fabrics based on an early picture book.”

‘The King’s Stilts’ Turns 75

stilts2014 marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of The King’s Stilts by Theodor Seuss Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss).

Unlike many of the rhyme master’s most popular picture books, this story is written in prose.

Artist Creates Mock ‘Breaking Bad’ Picture Book for ‘Little Golden Tales’ Art Show

Artist Maxime Mary created a Little Golden Books-style book jacket and one interior page showcasing characters from the popular crime TV series. The other artists behind the “Little Golden Tales” exhibit contributed pieces based on Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, and more.

According to io9, “some of the works pay tribute to the actual characters and artwork found in the classic children’s books, while others re-imagine other (sometimes inappropriate) works of pop culture in Golden Book form.” This art show is currently on display at a California-based establishment called Gallery Nucleus. It will close on February 09, 2014.

Free Samples of the 2014 Newbery Medal & Newbery Honor Winners

076366040xThe American Library Association has announced that Flora & Ulysess author Kate DiCamillo is the winner of the prestigious John Newbery Medal.

This middle grade novel features illustrations created by artist K.G. Campbell. DiCamillo, the newly crowned National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, earned a Newbery Honor in 2001 for Because of Winn-Dixie and a Newbery Medal in 2004 for The Tale of Despereaux.

Mariah Carey & Nick Cannon Ink Picture Book Deal with Scholastic

carey & cannonScholastic will publish a picture book written by Grammy Award-winning singer Mariah Carey and comedian Nick CannonRoc and Roe’s Twelve Days of Christmas is scheduled to hit bookstores in Fall 2014.

Desmond and the Very Mean Word illustrator AG Ford has signed on to create the artwork for this project. The celebrity husband-and-wife collaborators (pictured, via) intend for this book to be enjoyed by readers age 3 and up. The protagonists are based on the couple’s twin kids Moroccan and Monroe (nicknamed Roc and Roe).

According to the press release, the story “follows Roc and Roe as they put their own unique spin on the Christmas carol ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas.’ The deal was developed by D. Christopher Jennings and Robert Caruso, founders of Impact Republic, Nick Cannon’s Ncredible Entertainment, and Ken Geist, Vice President and Editorial Director, Scholastic Press Picture Books.” What do you think?

Kickstarter Features a Children’s Book on Kindness

Writer Shervin Youssefian hopes to raise $7,500 on Kickstarter for her chidren’s book project. Youssefian’s young niece Chloe inspired her to write The Story of My Face: A Story About Getting Along.

With this project, Youssefian hopes to teach young readers kindness. The finished book will contain 27 pages and full-color illustrations. We’ve embedded a video about the project above. Here’s more from the Kickstarter page:

Eric Carle Museum to Host ‘The Art of Bernard Waber’ Exhibit

0395137209_lresThe Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art will host an art show in honor of the late Bernard Waber.

The “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile and Friends: The Art of Bernard Waber” exhibit will run from March 19th to June 9th.

The curators have collected 85 picture book illustrations and other artwork pieces created by Waber for this program.
