Gene Luen Yang & Sonny Liew Revive ‘The Green Turtle’ For New Graphic Novel

ShadowHero-Ecover-1-rgb-550x843Printz Award winner Gene Luen Yang and artist Sonny Liew are teaming up for a graphic novel featuring The Green Turtle. This Asian American superhero, created by Chu F. Hing, was first introduced in the 1940′s.

According to Yang’s blog post, this protagonist only appeared in five issues of Blazing Comics. With the character now in the public domain, Yang and Liew came together to revive him with an origin story called The Shadow Hero.

First Second, a Macmillan imprint, plans to divide the book into six issues and digitally publish them on a monthly basis. The first issue, entitled The Green Turtle Chronicles, came out on February 18th. The finished print book will contain all six sections; a release date has been scheduled for July 15th.

HarperCollins to Release ‘The Graveyard Book’ as a Graphic Novel

graphic novelHarperCollins will publish a graphic novel adaptation of the Newbery Medal-winning title, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.

The first volume will be released on July 29, 2014 and the second one will follow on September 30, 2014. Eisner Award winner P. Craig Russell worked on adapting the story. Russell and a team of artists worked on the illustrations.

According to Gaiman’s blog post, each artist tackles the artwork for one chapter. Besides Russell, the artistic crew includes Kevin Nowlan, Tony Harris, Scott Hampton, Galen Showman, Jill Thompson, Stephen B. Scott, and David Lafuente. What do you think?

Jennifer Lawrence Stars in Comic Book

FAMEJenniferLawrenceKINDLEBluewater Productions has released a comic book biography profiling Hunger Games film star Jennifer Lawrence. Writer Michael Troy penned the story and artist Ben Eargle created the interior illustrations.

According to the press release, it also “features three unique covers each exclusively through Nook, Kindle or iTunes. Iordan Terziiski illustrated the Nook cover, Kindle by Jaume Font (pictured) and iTunes cover by Ben Eargle.”

Vanity Fair has posted excerpts from the book. In the past, the indie comic publisher has released biographical comics about Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins, comedian Betty White, Apple founder Steve Jobs, former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, and politician Ron Paul.

Disney Unveils Trailer For ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

Disney has unleashed a new trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Forbes reports that Disney aired a 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl instructing viewers to “go online and watch the second full trailer…it was a Super Bowl teaser for a trailer.” What do you think?

The video embedded above offers glimpses of actors Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson reprising their roles as Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) and Natasha Romanoff (aka the Black Widow). A Facebook announcement has drawn more than 40,000 “likes.” This movie adaptation will be seen on the silver screen starting on April 04, 2014.

IDW Publishing & Rovio Entertainment to Team Up for ‘Angry Birds’ Comics

bird comicIDW Publishing will team up with Rovio Entertainment to produce the Angry Birds comics.

The stories will feature characters that originate from the Angry Birds games including Red, Chuck, Bomb, Stella, Matilda and King Pig. The first book will be published in June 2014. Writers Jeff Parker and Paul Tobin have signed on to work on this project.

Here’s more from the press release: “The immense success of Angry Birds began in 2009 when the mobile game debuted. With 2 billion downloads through apps, the Angry Birds franchise has now been featured in nine different editions of the game, a number of successful toy lines, an animated series and is in development as a feature length film to be distributed by Sony Pictures. The innovative game solidified a market of casual gamers in the changing landscape of mobile devices.

Nelson Mandela Stars in Comic Book

MANDELATribBluewater Productions has released a comic book biography starring former South African President Nelson Mandela. Tribute: Nelson Mandela,a 32-page comic, features writing by Clay and Susan Griffith and illustrations by Pablo Martinena.

Publisher Darren G. Davis had this statement in the press release: “Not only is this a great way to understand the importance of his contribution to the world, but a great tool for kids to read about him in a different medium. Our biography comic books are now taught in schools and libraries for students and reluctant readers.”

IDW to Publish ‘Rocky & Bullwinkle’ Comic Book Series

rbIDW Publishing has partnered up with the Bullwinkle Studios and DreamWorks Animation for a new Rocky & Bullwinkle comic book series. The first issue will be released in March 2014.

A team has been assembled for this new venture. TV series will  Mark Evanier will serve as the series writer. Roger Langridge will work on creating interior art. Stephanie Buscema will craft the covers.

Dark Horse Comics to Celebrate ‘Hellboy Day’

hboytpbDark Horse Comics has declared that March 22, 2014 to be “Hellboy Day.”

“Hellboy Day” was set up to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the publication of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1.

Mike Mignola, the artist and co-writer behind the first issue, will make an appearance at Meltdown Comics and Collectibles (located in West Hollywood, CA) on that day to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Archie Comics Donates More Than $1 Million Worth of Children’s Books to Toys for Tots

365Archie Comics has donated more than $1 million worth of children’s books to the Toys for Tots nonprofit organization.

Here’s more from the press release: “Archie Comics wants to encourage its fans to join in with a new initiative called ‘Archie’s Give-a-Book Program,’ to spread the gift of giving to children. Making books available to every child to encourage creativity and literacy is an important mission to Archie Comics.”

To commemorate this, the editorial team has created a special story called “Holiday Heroes.” The story follows the Riverdale High students working together to help out Toys For Tots. Readers will find it in Archie Double Digest issue #246.

The Jewish Museum Opens an Art Spiegelman Retrospective

artThe Jewish Museum has opened a new exhibit called “Art Spiegelman’s Co-Mix: A Retrospective.” This New York City-based institution has created an art show profiles the career of the acclaimed graphic novelist (pictured, via).

According to Forward.com, the curators collected hundreds of drawings. Viewers will also get to see photographs, studies, and interview transcripts. The exhibit will run until March 23, 2014.
