Cute Celebrity Cats Call the Creative Shots on YouTube, and 10 Other Video Pointers

YouTube viewers love cat videos, but it’s not all fun and games for feline performers, according to Michael Fasciano, social content director at Digitas. At 2014’s Media Summit in New York last week, he spoke on a panel about YouTube, offering a behind-the-scenes account of negotiations for his client to sign Maru, a male cat living in Japan and worldwide YouTube sensation.

Maru has been a YouTube star for a few years, consistently drawing throngs of worldwide viewers, and his owner posts videos under the account name Mugumogu. When a Digitas client wanted to feature Maru, who “jumps into a lot of things”, Fasciano sprang into action. He tracked down the cat and owner, confirming the relationship with a contract. Then he made arrangements to bring an American production crew to Tokyo.

Digitas promoted Tony Weisman to North American CEO of the Publicis Groupe shop. Weisman replaces Colin Kinsella, who joined the company from sister shop Razorfish in early 2010 as president and took on the North American role in October 2011. Weisman spent the past six years as president of Digitas Northwest, leading the digital shop’s work—and growth—out of its Boston, Chicago, Detroit and San Francisco offices. (AdWeek)

Business Wire announced that Jill Connor has been promoted to vice president, Cleveland region. In this new role, Connor leads the sales, operations and media relations teams for Ohio, Indiana and Western Pennsylvania. She will also serve as the main liaison for Business Wire India, guiding its product and sales support. Connor started working at Business Wire as an editor in 1990; one year later she moved over to the sales department where she became regional manager in 2001. With her lead, the Cleveland office was working with the majority of Fortune 500 companies in the Western Pennsylvania area within only a few years of setting foot into the territory. (Release)

Glover Park Group announced that co-founder Joe Lockhart is returning to the firm to serve as senior advisor. Lockhart, who served as chief spokesman for the Clinton administration from 1998 to 2000 before helping to start Glover Park in 2001, most recently served as vice president for global communications at Facebook. In his new role, he will be responsible for helping the firm shape its communication strategies. (Release)

Hill+Knowlton Strategies announced that Sergio Morales has been appointed U.S. practice leader for consumer and marketing communications, effective immediately. In this role, Morales will be responsible for providing strategic counsel and oversight on consumer and marketing communications clients, as well as building and strengthening client relationships within the practice. Simon & Schuster recently restructured, promoting Brian Belfiglio to vice president and director of publicity of both the Scribner and Touchstone publicity departments. McDonald’s hasn’t hired a new mascot, but it has appointed a new VP SVP of global external comms. Bridget Coffing has been promoted to the position (she was previously VP), in which she’s responsible for media relations, marcomms, internal communications, PR, and CSR. Anne Watkins has joined Primary Wave Music, a music branding, publishing, and talent management company, as director of PR. She was previously with Lizzie Grubman Public Relations. Among Primary Wave’s clients are Cee Lo Green (right), Eric Benet, and Steven Tyler.

Meghan Stuvvenberg has joined Savings.com, the online coupon site, as head of PR and community management. In her role, she’ll be in charge of media relations, deal syndication, and audience engagement. She was previously associate director of digital at Hill & Knowlton in Australia. Brian Lee has also joined the company as head of consumer experience, in charge of positioning the benefits of the site and its recent personalization launch. He comes from BabyCenter.com where he was director of product management.
