Evening News Ratings: Week of September 16

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was the most-watched evening newscast last week, but No. 2 “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” is gaining  in the younger demo. For the 8th straight week, “World News” cut its year-to-year gap with “Nightly News” by double-digits in A25-54 viewers.

“World News” was the only broadcast to grow in both total viewers and younger viewers year-over-year: +3% / +8%, respectively. “Nighty News” was up in viewers (+4%) and flat in the demo. Evening News Ratings: 2012-2013 Season

EveningNews304x200While two of the three evening newscasts grew their total viewer audience over the last year, all three broadcasts continued to see erosion in the A25-54 news demo.

For the 17th straight year, “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” was the most-watched evening newscast in the just-finished 2012-13 season. The broadcast was down -2% in total viewers and down -5% in the demo compared to the 2011-2012 season. “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” was up +2% in viewers and was down less than -1% in the demo. This is the closest No. 2 “World News” has been to “Nightly News” since the 2007-08 season.

For the third year in a row — and the only broadcast to do so — No. 3 “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” grew its total viewer audience by +7%. The show is up +10% from the 2010-2011 season.

But like NBC and ABC, CBS was also down in the demo, down -2%. The three evening newscasts drew a combined 5.93 million viewers last season, down from 6.5 million in the 2010-2011 season.

Evening News Ratings: Week of Sept. 2

In Brian Williams‘ return to “Nightly News” following knee replacement surgery, the NBC program holds its No. 1 spot, while ABC’s “World News with Diane Sawyer” gets the closest its been in nearly a year.

The first week of September saw several pre-emptions. Usually, the newscasts exclude holidays from the average. But this year, “World News” kept Labor Day in the mix. As it turns out, that was a big day for ABC. The newscast drew a whopping 8.8 million viewers last Monday, the most-watched “World News” in five months.

Monday’s “NBC Nightly News” and “CBS Evening News” were excluded from the averages, as was Friday’s “Evening News” due to the U.S. Open and Thursday’s “Nightly News” due to the NFL opener.

Compared to the same week last year, “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” saw the biggest growth among total viewers (+9%) but the biggest drop in the younger demo (-9%). ABC was up +3% in viewers and up +5% in the demo while NBC was up +1% in viewers and flat in the demo.

Evening News Ratings: Week of August 26

The evening newscasts finished the final week of August down from where they were at this point last summer. Not surprising considering the week of Aug. 27, 2012 saw Hurricane Isaac wash ashore and the Republican National Convention convene in Tampa. One bright spot continues to be the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” which grew its viewership +5% year-over-year, the only newscast to do so. However, “Evening News” lost the most among the younger demo, down -12%.

“Nightly News” lost -4% of its viewership and -9% in the demo while “World News with Diane Sawyer” was down -2% / -6% respectively.

Numbers for the week of August 26, 2013:

NBC ABC CBS
• Total Viewers: 7,615,000 7,102,000 6,317,000
• A25-54: 1,878,000 1,786,000 1,533,000

Evening News Ratings: Week of August 19

While still in third place in the ratings race, the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” showed the most total viewer growth last week: up +7% compared to the same week last year.

And the gap among the newscasts is narrowing. 2.35 million viewers separated “Nightly” and “Evening News” last year. This year the gap was 1.32 million. Last year, “Nightly” was 757,000 viewers ahead of “World News with Diane Sawyer.” Last week, the gap was 174,000.

“Nightly News” lost -8% of its viewership year-over-year, while “World News with Diane Sawyer” was down a slight -1%.

Among younger viewers, all three broadcasts shed viewers: “Nightly” was down -14%, “Evening News” was down -7% and “World News” was down -3%.

NBC ABC CBS
• Total Viewers: 7,163,000 6,989,000 5,842,000
• A25-54: 1,802,000 1,741,000 1,476,000

Evening News Ratings: Week of August 12

With Brian Williams off recovering from knee replacement surgery, “NBC Nightly News” with Lester Holt filling in remained the top evening newscast for the week of August 12.

But compared to the same week last year, only the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” showed total viewer growth. It also shed the most viewers in the A25-54 demo by percentage. CBS was up +4% in viewers, and down -15% in the demo. The loss of younger viewers could be attributed to the fact that CBS remains blacked out for Time Warner Cable customers in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and other markets. “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” saw a slight drop in viewers (-2%) and a slight uptick in the demo (+1%).

“Nightly” was down in both measurements: -8% and -14%, which was the week following the London Summer Olympics. During that period “Nightly News” saw its greatest viewership lead ever over its competitors.

Numbers for the week of August 12, 2013:

NBC ABC CBS
• Total Viewers: 7,195,000 6,896,000 5,768,000
• A25-54: 1,865,000 1,774,000 1,385,000

Evening News Ratings: Week of August 5

“NBC Nightly News” remained the top network evening newscast for the week of August 5 in both total viewers and the adults 25-54 demo, though “ABC World News” remains close in the demo. Two weeks ago ABC was able to top NBC in the demo.

Compared to the same week last year, NBC is down sigificantly in both total and demo viewers, though that week saw NBC’s 2012 Olympics coverage, which inflated the ratings. ABC and CBS were up in total viewers, but down somewhat in the demo.

Compared to last week, NBC is up in both categories, while ABC and CBS are down in both categories. Brian Williams remains out of commission as he recovers from knee surgery.

Numbers for the week of August 5, 2013:

NBC ABC CBS
• Total Viewers: 7,591,000 7,073,000 5,734,000
• A25-54: 2,007,000 1,761,000 1,399,000

Evening News Ratings: Week of July 29

As NBC’s Brian Williams goes under the knife today to replace his right knee, his evening newscast is back on top in both ratings measurements.

The week earlier, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” broke the “NBC Nightly News” 243-week winning streak among younger viewers. For the week of July 29, “Nightly” edged “World News” by 68,000 viewers (or 4%), despite the ABC show winning three nights last week: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Compared to the same week last year, which included the first week of the London Summer Games, “Nightly” was down dramatically: -31% in viewers and down -43% in the demo. The year-ago week saw NBC, which has the rights to the Olympics, experience its best-ever total viewer advantage over both ABC and CBS.

“World News” saw year-over-year growth: +2% in viewers and +6% in the demo, while “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” grew among total viewers (+5%) but was down -11% in the demo.

Signing off “Nightly News” last night, Williams said, “I will see you back here before long equipped with the newest factory-produced right knee at all the networks.”
