New York Mets Catcher Quits Twitter Due To Fans

If Josh Thole of the New York Mets thought the media in the Big Apple was critical, think again.

The struggling catcher quit Twitter this week after fans took to the social media tool to express their feelings on his slow start.

“I thought this was supposed to be fun,” Thole told The Star-Ledger Wednesday. “They’re ruthless on there.”

The tweets ranged from the usual colorful name-calling to my personal favorite – - hitting advice.

Based on his .239 average and .577 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, Thole could use all the advice he can get at this point.

Esquire Writer Banned from Miami Heat Arena

Scott RaabEsquire writer, Cleveland native, LeBron James hater – had an excellent assignment: Go to Miami and chronicle King James for a week.

Except he penned a column and promptly got himself banned from the building.

It’s a wonderful post, full of appropriate rage and nice anecdotes. If we had to guess, we’d say the concluding paragraph probably pushed the Heat over the edge.

Nobody asks LeBron whether playing 39 minutes and 20 seconds is too much, too little, or just right. Nobody asks him about the Toronto coach, probably because no one can remember his name. It’s a long, long season, the Heat are 6-4, and nobody wants to piss off anybody, least of all the kid glowering onstage, who took his talents to South Beach and left his smile behind.

Raab is writing a book about the woe of Cleveland sports and wanted an interview with LeBron. That’s probably not going to happen anymore, but don’t stop Mr. Raab. Please don’t stop.

NHL Network Promotes 24/7 Penguins/Capitals in Curious Manner

The good news is that HBO Sports plans to promote 24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road To The NHL Winter Classic with a 12-minute preview that debuts on November 20 that will be repeated a total of 19 times on HBO and HBO2.

The less good news: The premiere will take place at 12:15 a.m. If you can’t make the Nov. 20th airing – and who will? – you can check out the segment at HBO on Demand starting on Nov. 29th.

And what is the series? It’s an all-access look at both squads.

The Capitals are guided by Bruce Boudreau, while the Penguins’ head coach is Dan Bylsma. The two Eastern Conference rivals led by superstars Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby will meet in the NHL’s Bridgestone Winter Classic on New Year’s Day at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

Schedule after the jump.

ESPN Targeting Female Demographic With espnW

ESPN plans on targeting the female demographic with a new-sub brand called espnW.

“It really is a specific and dedicated platform to women in the form of a website,” said Laura Gentile, vice president of espnW, who spoke to SportsNewser on Friday. “It will start off as a blog this fall and evolve into a full-fledged website next spring with a mobile site and a pretty large presence on Twitter and Facebook. It’s really digital, mobile and social at its core right out of the gate.”

espnW has been in the works for over two years now as ESPN has noticed that women athletes and fans are underserved. espnW will look to capitalize on that huge void. Read more
