Fake News Anchor Will McAvoy Takes Home Real Emmy

Jeff Daniels EmmyJeff Daniels, who plays anchorman Will McAvoy on HBO’s “Newsroom” took home the Emmy for best actor in a drama tonight. Daniels wins the top award in his first year of eligibility. The second season of “Newsroom” concluded last Sunday and HBO has already given the green light for a season three. Daniels was up against tough competition from co-nominees “Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, “Mad Men’s” Jon Hamm, Damien Lewis of “Homeland,” Hugh Bonneville of “Downton Abbey” and Kevin Spacey of “House of Cards.”

Later, the “Colbert Report” took home two awards, including outstanding variety series, besting “The Daily Show” which had won the award for the last 10 years. “I personally have to thank my friend and my brother, Jon Stewart,” said Stephen Colbert. “Jon never told me how good this feels, actually.”

Colbert also won for outstanding writing for variety series. Since 2008, Colbert Report and The Daily Show have traded off winning the top writing award. Colbert won in 2008 and 2010, Daily Show won in 2009, 2011, and 2012.

Making News Rather Than Covering It: Tales From Campaign 2012

Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, and Ricky Martin were just three of the numerous celebrity endorsers of President Barack Obama in 2012.  All appeared at re-election events, part of a meticulously organized entertainment publicity effort.

One of the key players in attracting talent and overseeing coordination was former GMA and 20/20 Senior Producer – and former CBS News consultant and NBC News producer – Eric Ortner (photographed at right with Jon Hamm at the Democratic National Convention in September).

Now a Los Angeles talent manager and tv/film producer, Ortner became co-chair of the campaign’s Entertainment Advisory Council. He tells TVNewser the celebrity mix was important in helping the campaign “build a network for voter registration and get-out-the vote-efforts” and to “engage and mobilize the audience”.

Otrner says his background as a tvnewser - who’d covered politics for the networks - was helpful. “The real benefit and brilliance” of the entertainment council effort, he reflects, ”was that celebrity surrogates provided media that the campaign didn’t have to buy.”

Which CNN-er is Conan O’Brien’s Guardian Angel?

As we mentioned yesterday, last night was the premiere of Conan O’Brien‘s new late night show “Conan” on TBS. The program started with a cold open “recapping” the last few months in O’Brien’s life, and included cameos from people like Jon Hamm, in addition to a moment taken straight from the 1967 classic “Bonnie and Clyde” (Update: actually, it was a reference to “The Godfather,” not sure why I had “Bonnie and Clyde” on my mind).

But Hamm wasn’t the only guest star to make a surprise appearance. A well known CNN personality popped in to serve as O’Brien’s guardian angel in a time of need:

ABC’s Martha Raddatz on HBO’s ‘Real Time’

ABC News senior foreign affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz was a guest panelist on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night. She was joined by Republican strategist Mark McKinnon and actor Jon Hamm.

“Real Time” is a tough show for journalists to be on, given the extremely opinionated nature of Maher and his regular guests.

Indeed, Raddatz was pushed into giving her opinion about everything from the Tea Party movement to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq… the latter two being subjects she covers for ABC. That being said, she has appeared on the program in past seasons, so presumably she knew what she was getting herself into:

The Jon Hamm-Brian Williams Rivalry Gets Taken to a Creepy Level

“Mad Men” star Jon Hamm appeared on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” last week, where he talked a little bit about his last stint hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

It seems Hamm starred in an “SNL” skit that was originally written for “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams.

Williams did not take this lightly:
