‘Dateline NBC’ Adds Wednesdays

DatelineLogoThe venerable newsmagazine “Dateline” is moving up on NBC’s Friday schedule and it’s also adding a new hour on Wednesdays for the crucial November sweeps.

Starting tomorrow, the show airs at 8pmET/7pmCT. And beginning November 6, for three weeks, a new Wednesday episode will air at 10pmET. Currently, NBC has been running back-to-back episodes of “Law & Order: SVU” at 9 and 10pm.

Season-to-date, ”Dateline” is the No. 1 Friday newsmagazine, topping “20/20″ in total viewers by +18% and in the A25-54 demo by +6%. Compared to the first three weeks of last season, the show has posted the largest audience growth of any newsmagazine, up +22% among total viewers.

Keith Morrison, who’s been with the show since 1995, thinks he knows why the show is still going strong: “Our current fascination with murder mysteries seems to be on steroids!” Morrison tells the Daily Mail. “Some of the most watched shows on TV – even the fiction programs – are about crime.”

Here’s how the network newsmagazines are stacking up this season:

  • 60 Minutes (CBS/Sunday) – 13.547M total viewers / 2.4 A18-49 rating
  • Dateline (NBC/Friday) – 5.804M total viewers / 1.3 A18-49 rating.
  • 48 Hours (CBS/Saturday) – 5.247M total viewers / 0.9 A18-49 rating
  • 20/20 (ABC/Friday) – 4.913M total viewers / 1.3 A18-49 rating

NBC, ABC and ID Set Sights On Oscar Pistorius This Weekend

The strange murder case involving Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius continues to garner serious news coverage two weeks after he killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius, on the cover of the current issue of TIME magazine, is the focus of specials on three TV networks in the coming days.

On Friday at 10pmET/PT, ABC’s “20/20″ will air “The Fast Times of Oscar Pistorious,” dedicating the hour to coverage of what happened the night Pistorious shot Steenkamp. Amy Robach leads the coverage from South Africa.

NBC’s “Dateline, which airs from 8-10pmET/PT on Friday, will be dedicating the 9pm hour to the Pistorious case. Keith Morrison reports.

NBC’s Peacock Productions is producing “Beauty & The Bladerunner” for the Investigation Discovery channel. The special will air Sunday at 8pmET/PT on ID, and features some footage from the “Dateline” report, as well as other material.

Changing Times for ‘Dateline’ and ‘Rock Center’

NBC’s two newsmagazines get new timeslots tonight. “Rock Center with Brian Williams” moves to 10pmET/9pmCT while two hours of “Dateline” moves back to 8pmET/7pmCT giving NBC News control of NBC’s Friday primetime schedule. Williams has been promoting his new timeslot on air, while “Dateline” correspondents Keith Morrison and Josh Mankiewicz had a little fun shooting an online promo in the LA bureau. Watch:

John McAfee Heads To CNBC, NBC For Interviews

Former anti-virus software millionaire turned runaway fugitive John McAfee generated lots of press late last year, as he fled Belize amid questions about a neighbor’s murder. A slew of reporters eventually found him in Guatemala, where he was rushed to the hospital, before being deported back to the United States.

Today, he is making the interview rounds on CNBC and NBC. Around 2:30 PM CNBC will conduct a live interview with McAfee, then later this evening McAfee will be interviewed on “Dateline” as part of a two-hour special at 9 PM on his neighbor’s murder. Keith Morrison traveled to South America to talk to McAfee, and the interview–his most extensive yet–was taped before he was deported.

Following Arrest, McAfee Rushed to Hospital. TV Reporters Pursue, Tweet

Reporters in Guatemala covering the arrest of McAfee anti-virus pioneer John McAfee are in a mad dash to report a new twist in the case this afternoon: McAfee has been rushed to a hospital. ABC’s Matt Gutman and NBC’s Keith Morrison are among the U.S. reporters Tweeting details from the scene:

A Tribute to Ann Curry, and a Rap From Lester Holt, at ‘Dateline’ 20th Anniversary Celebration

NBC News threw a party last night, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its primetime newsmagazine “Dateline.”

While the mood was celebratory, it was hard to escape the elephant in the room. In an address to guests at the event, senior EP David Corvo paid tribute to a number of former “Dateline” staffers, including former anchor Ann Curry who bid farewell to the “Today” show earlier in the day.

“Ann had her own sweet, persistent way of coming into my office, day after day, trying to push us to do certain types of stories that we weren’t doing,” Corvo said. “Her legacy probably on the show more than anything else is ‘America Now,’ which has gotten a lot of awards, was fun to produce and made a difference in some people’s lives, which is what Ann is dedicated to.”

Dateline EP Liz Cole likened the party to a “family reunion,” and it did feel that way. TVNewser spotted Hoda Kotb (who at one point danced in the DJ booth), correspondents Chris Hansen, and Keith Morrison, original anchor Jane Pauley (but not Stone Phillips) and former “Dateline” correspondent and current Fox News anchor Jon Scott. The event, held at Catch in New York’s Meatpacking District, was the second 20th anniversary party for the series in less than a year (see our report from the first one, here). Former NBC News president and “Dateline” EP Neal Shapiro was there, as was current NBC News chief Steve Capus, who praised the program:

NBC Edges ABC in Friday Newsmagazine Face-Off; CBS Beats Them Both

“Dateline” and “20/20″ went head-to-head last night, with both newsmagazines recounting the tragic end to the Josh Powell story. In the end, the two news shows essentially evenly split the audience.

“Dateline,” which spent the hour on the Powell story with Keith Morrison reporting from Puyallup, WA, drew 5.18M. While “20/20,” with Chris Cuomo anchoring from Washington, brought in 5.16M. “20/20″ devoted half its show to the Powell story. “Dateline” also edged out “20/20″ in the A18-49 demo with a 1.5 rating/4 share to ABC’s 1/4 rating. The two tied in A18-34 (0.8/3).

Both shows were beat out by CBS’s “Blue Bloods” which drew more than the combined average of ABC and NBC with 11.77 million total viewers.

Today in Tacoma, WA hundreds of mourners attended a funeral service for 7-year-old Charlie and 5-year-old Braden Powell, killed by their father last Sunday. Josh Powell took his own life, in the process, blowing up the house he’d been living in.

Dateline, 20/20 End Week with the Same Grisly Tale

ABC’s “20/20″ and NBC’s “Dateline” will go head-to-head Friday night with reports on the same topic: the story of Josh Powell, the Utah man who killed himself and his two young sons in an explosion on Sunday. Powell had been implicated in the disappearance of his wife Susan in late 2009.

On “Dateline,” Keith Morrison talks with Powell’s in-laws, Charles and Judy Cox, as well as his sister, Jennifer Powell. The “20/20″ report, anchored by Chris Cuomo, will focus on the events leading up to the tragedy. Jennifer Powell sat for an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” earlier this week. And today Cuomo talked with the social worker who dropped off the Powell boys at the home last Sunday.

“He caught my eye, his shoulders were slumped. He had a sheepish look,” Hall told ABC News. “He just shrugged his shoulders and slammed the door.”

Both shows air on Friday at 10pmET. We’ll have the overnight ratings for you on Saturday.

‘This is an hour show, so we’ve got to stretch this out’

Friday nights you can watch Keith Morrison on “Dateline,” but on select Saturday nights Morrison, in the form of Bill Hader turns up on SNL, like he did last night, investigating “The Murder of the Chopped Up Guy.”

“Diego confessed, but let’s ignore that. Because this is an hour show, so we’ve got to stretch this out. And because it’s “Dateline” there’s only one photo to use.”

NBC’s ‘Dateline’ Celebrates 20th Season With Mystery-Themed Party

TVNewser stopped by an event in celebration of the 20th season of NBC’s “Dateline” last night. The party, which had a mystery theme, was held at Manhattan’s Griffou.

Attendees — including Chris Hansen, Hoda Kotb, Dennis Murphy, Keith Morrison, Josh Mankiewicz and “Dateline” executive producer Liz Cole — had their mugshots taken and uploaded to Twitter using the hashtag #howdoyoudateline.

Also in attendance was NBC News President Steve Capus, who was spending his birthday with the “Dateline” crew (they had a chocolate cake in his honor). He told TVNewser that earlier in the day he received a “Put On A Happy Face” singing telegram at his office.

More mugshots after the jump. Read more
