Layoffs at NBC’s ‘Dateline’

dateline logoSeveral people have been laid off from NBC’s “Dateline,” TVNewser has learned.

The layoffs amount to about 10 people in the investigative and booking units of the show. Their responsibilities will be absorbed by current “Dateline” staffers, with the NBC News investigative unit picking up some extra slack for the newsmagazine.

“The number of original hours that Dateline produces each season fluctuates which affects the size of the staff, that’s always been the case,” an NBC News spokesperson told TVNewser. “We’re proud of the work this season and the quality of Dateline continues to go up and expand into new formats.”

Earlier today, NBC News announced the hire of Cynthia McFadden, who joins the network as a senior legal and investigative correspondent after two decades at ABC News. The addition of McFadden is one of several high-profile hires made in NBC News’ investigative unit over the past year, including Richard Esposito and Mark Schone, also from ABC News.

NBC News Hires Richard Esposito and Mark Schone From ABC News

NBC News is expanding its investigative reporting unit with two hires from ABC News, Richard Esposito and Mark Schone.

Esposito brings more than 30 years of reporting experience to NBC, where he will be the senior executive producer of the investigative unit. In his 12 years at ABC, he focused primarily on homeland security and the criminal justice system as a member of a member of Brian Ross‘ investigative unit.

Schone will join the investigative unit at NBCNews.com as an editor on April 22. At ABC, he was digital managing editor of the investigative unit. He was previously the executive news editor of Salon.com and a senior contributing writer at SPIN magazine.

“Richard and Mark are bold, experienced journalists known for their intrepid work. By building on the outstanding efforts of our veteran teams and utilizing our multiple on-air and online platforms, we now have an unparalleled capacity to continue breaking news and dig even deeper into important stories,” NBC News SVP Antoine Sanfuentes said in a statement.
