KWQC News Director Beth Marsoun Steps Down

kwqc_logoBeth Marsoun has stepped down as news director of KWQC, the NBC affiliate in Davenport, Iowa, general manager Ken Freedman confirms to TVSpy.

After working as an intern at KWQC in college, Marsoun officially began her career at the station as a news editor in 2003. She worked as KWQC’s executive producer before she was promoted to news director in 2012.

Freedman called Marsoun a “beloved member of our team.” She will stay in her role until a successor is named, and possibly stay with the station beyond that: “It is both Beth’s intention and my goal to find an appropriate position, to be determined at a later date, in the KWQC news department once we transition to a new news director,” Freedman told TVSpy.

Jeff Fitzgerald Promoted to News Director

fitzgerals_wlioJeff Fitzgerald has been named news director for Block Communications Lima, OH, NBC, ABC, FOX and CBS affiliates WLIO and WOHL.

Fitzgerald will continue to anchor the 6:00 p.m. news for the stations. He told TVSpy he starts his new duties tomorrow.

He started at WLIO in 1984 and has anchored the 6:00 p.m. since 1990.

WBAY Says Goodbye to Longtime News Director

Green Bay ABC affiliate WBAY said goodbye to its longtime newsroom leader Friday.

Tom McCarey announced his retirement in October. He will be replaced by Matt Kummer.

McCarey was 17 when he started in the production department at WBAY. After a stint in the Navy he was offered a job in news. He’s worked as a reporter, photographer, producer and assignment editor at the station. He was promoted to news director in 1983.

“We have a great station here, we have great people, my job was to find good people and bring them in and let them do their job and get out of their way,” McCarey said in the story the station ran about his retirement. “I hope the station is in the same position in the community as it is now, that would make me very happy.”

Christopher Ford Named WHEC News Director

ford_croppedChristopher Ford has been named news director for Rochester, NY, NBC affiliate WHEC.

“I am very excited to have Chris join our team,” Derek Dalton, WHEC vice president and general manager said in a statement. “His investigative background and passion to serve will be a real asset to our newsroom and our Rochester community.”

Dalton told TVSpy, Ford will start at WHEC in mid-January.

Before coming to WHEC, Ford was assistant news director at WTSP in Tampa, FL. He has also worked at WTMJ in Milwaukee and CLTV the 24-hour Chicago cable network.

WKBN-WYTV News Director Dies at 55

gary coursenGary Coursen, the news director at WKBN-WYTV in Youngstown, has died of cancer. He was 55.

The station reported that Coursen, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, fell into a coma over the weekend after having surgery Thursday. His cancer originated in his nasal area and had moved into his brain, according to WKBN.

He had been WKBN’s news director since 2003. “Coursen was a quiet leader. He was not a micro-manager, though everyone in the news department knew he was in charge,” WKBN said in a tribute on its website. “…He will be profoundly missed here at the WKBN/WYTV studios.”

WXYZ Names Dave Manney News Director

wxyz logo_304x200WXYZ has announced Dave Manney will join the station as news director.

Manney returns to the Detroit ABC affiliate from WNBC in New York where he was managing editor. He worked at WXYZ early in his career.

“Having covered and been a part of many pivotal moments in Detroit’s recent history, it’s thrilling to return during its most important hour,” said Manney in a statement.  “WXYZ is where I grew up. It’s also where I learned the power and responsibility of TV and online news–and the obligation we have to make a difference.”

Before WNBC, Manney had worked as managing editor at New York’s WPIX and director of content for Detroit Public Television. He spent eight years at WXYZ, working as an investigative producer, executive producer of programming, assistant news director and online news manager. From 2003 to 2005, he was director of communications for the city of Detroit.

Manney begins in his new role on Monday, January 6.

Bernice Kearney Promoted to ND at KSAT

ksat logoBernice Kearney has been named news director at San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT. Her appointment is effective immediately.

Kearney replaces Jim Boyle, who has retired from KSAT. In addition to assistant news director, she has also worked as a producer and executive producer at the station.

“Trying to continue the legacy Jim Boyle has created in this community will be a real challenge, but one that I’m proud and honored to accept as we lead KSAT12’s evolution into a multi-media company,” Kearney said in a statement.

“We will greatly miss Jim’s leadership, his vision for KSAT12 and San Antonio, and his unbridled connection to this community,” VP-GM Phil Lane said. “It is with a very heavy heart that we accept his retirement and we know that he will forever be connected to the people he mentored and led for the past 30 years.” [h/t Mike McGuff]

Sam Belilty Named ND at Univision Dallas

univision_smallSam Belilty has been named news director at KUVN, the Unvision station in Dallas, MediaMoves reports. He comes from the Univision station in San Antonio, KWEX, where he has been news director for six years.

Before KWEX, Belilty worked at the Univision station in Fresno, where he held a variety of positions, including news director, creative services director and executive producer of the morning newscast. He is a former correspondent for Radio Caracas Television in Miami.

News Director Bill Payer Out at WIAT

wiat logoNews director Bill Payer is out at Birmingham CBS affiliate WIAT. Payer announced his departure in an email to station staffers Wednesday:

 I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your part in was has been an seven of the most gratifying years of my professional life….today, ironically, was the last day of the seventh year.

I regret I did not have the opportunity to express this in person but I truly appreciate the effort, the dedication and the professionalism you all have exhibited over those seven years.  I can only hope I was as supportive of your efforts as I wanted to be.  I know at times it seemed like I was never satisfied, but that’s only because there was so much more potential in each of you.

Payer has been the news director at WIAT since 2006. He has previously worked as news director for WKBW in Buffalo and as assistant news director at KPIX in San Francisco.

Mike McCormick Out as WTEV-WAWS ND

action news jacksonvilleNews director Mike McCormick is out at WTEV-WAWS, Cox Media’s CBS and Fox affiliates in Jacksonville, Fla.

“Mike McCormick has left our company,” general manager Jim Zerwekh told TVSpy. “Mike Dreaden, WSB-TV News Director will additionally be overseeing the news operation until which time I name a new ND.”

McCormick has been news director since 2008. Before joining WTEV-WAWS, he worked as news director at WPMI in Mobile, WKYC in Cleveland and WTLV in Jacksonville.
