New York’s Longest Serving News Anchor Announces Retirement

pineda_wxtvRafael Pineda, the main anchor for Noticias Univision 41 is retiring after more than 42 years with Univision’s New York owned station WXTV.

“Rafael’s integrity, dedication and connection to our audience have made him one of a kind,” Ramón J. Pineda, senior vice president and general manager of WXTV said in a statement. “Noticias Univision 41 viewers, along with those of us who have had the pleasure to work with him, have benefited from his commitment to quality journalism. Rafael will always have a home, a family, here at Univision 41, and we wish him the best as he enters the next chapter in his life.”

Pineda joined WXTV in 1972. According to Univision he is the longest serving television news anchor in New York.

In November, Pineda will be inducted into the New York State Broadcaster’s Association Hall of Fame. In 2000, he was the first Latino inducted into The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Silver Circle.

Pineda’s last day will be December 20.

Univision’s WXTV Adds Jorge Viera, Shuffles Evening Anchors

Univision News correspondent Jorge Viera is joining WXTV, Univision’s flagship station serving New York City, as a reporter and anchor of the 11 p.m. newscast.

Beginning in September, Viera will co-anchor the late evening newscast alongside Adriana Vargas. Rafael Pineda, who has worked as WXTV’s primary anchor since 1972, will continue to co-anchor the 6 p.m. newscast with Vargas.

“We are thrilled to have Jorge join our team.  He has been part of the Univision Family for many years so he brings with him an outstanding record of news reporting for our audience,” news director Norma Morato said in a statement. “His vast experience in journalism will contribute to our commitment to continue to deliver an informative high quality newscast for our viewers in the New York area.”

WXTV, the Univision station in New York, officially introduces a brand-new high definition set (pictured above) on the evening newscast tonight.

Inside Univision: A Look at the Rise of Spanish-Language Newscasts

In his eight years as general manager of WXTV in New York, Ramon Pineda has seen major growth within the Univision station’s core demographic. As the U.S. Hispanic population continues to expand, the station has experienced a major spike in ratings; during the most recent sweeps period, WXTV posted some of its strongest numbers ever, particularly among younger viewers.

“We live in a marketplace that has changed,” Pineda said in a recent interview with TVSpy. “So what works to our advantage at Univision is that the marketplace is changing to our favor on a daily basis. In the last 12 years, the population in New York has changed dramatically and has become more Hispanic.”

According to Nielsen, the New York DMA has seen a 31 percent increase in the Hispanic population among the A18-49 demographic since 2000. In the most recent sweeps period, WXTV delivered the most A18-49 viewers at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in any language. Read more
