Eric Land Named President-GM at WTLV-WJXX

Eric Land has been named president and general manager of WTLV-WJXX, Gannett Broadcasting’s duopoly in Jacksonville.

Land is a broadcast veteran who has previously served as president-GM of WFLA in Tampa, WIAT in Birmingham and WGRZ in Buffalo.  He is also a former COO of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers. Most recently, he was president and CEO of Walkabout Air Aviation.

“Eric brings a rich and diverse background of innovation and experience to our duopoly in Jacksonville,” Gannett EVP Lynn Beall said in a statement.  “He possesses strong leadership abilities and dynamic business skills that will benefit both WTLV and WJXX. Eric knows how to build brands and has a proven track record of taking major market stations to new levels.” Read more

Obama Buys Up Tampa TV Time During Republican National Convention

President Obama‘s team plans to blanket the Tampa airwaves with ads during the last week of August while the Republican party holds their national convention in the area.

Obama for America has bought up more than $181,000 in ad time from Tampa stations for the week of the convention, Politico reports.  Obama’s campaign team spent $73,720 for 49 spots on Tampa CBS-affiliate WTSP, $54,500 for 75 spots on ABC-affiliate WFTS, and $53,750 for 42 spots on NBC-affiliate WFLA.

The Republican National Convention will be held August 27-30 in Tampa.  Recent poll numbers show Obama with a slight edge in Florida.

Sportscaster Jason Jennings Joins WFLA From WRAL

Jason Jennings is joining Tampa NBC-affiliate WFLA as a weekend sports anchor and reporter.

Since 2005, Jennings has worked in his hometown as sports reporter and photographer at WRAL, the CBS-affiliate in Raleigh-Durham. He signs on at WFLA on August 20, according to Tampa Bay Online.

“Jason will fit right in covering the local sports scene in Tampa Bay,” WFLA news director Don North said in announcing the hire.

Tampa’s WFLA to Launch 7 p.m. Newscast

Tampa NBC-affiliate WFLA has announced the launch of a 7 p.m. newscast beginning July 30.

The newscast’s debut coincides with the start of the Olympics, which will air on NBC. It will be anchored by Jennifer Leigh, who currently anchors WFLA’s 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts, and one other person who has yet to be hired, according to the Tampa Tribune.

“There are plenty of options for news out there, but we don’t think there are people watching hour after hour of news,” WFLA news director Don North said. “We are looking at plenty of people who are not able to see the news before, because they were driving home.” Read more

Media General Reorganizes TV Stations Into Two Regional Units

After selling its newspaper assets, Media General has announced a corporate restructuring that elevates James Conschafter and John Cottingham to key leadership roles for the company’s television stations.

The company’s current structure of five geographic regions will be replaced by two geographic regions for its 18 television stations. Conschafter and Cottingham, who have both been named corporate vice presidents, will each oversee one region.

“With our June 25 sale of newspapers, Media General is focusing all of its resources on its broadcast television group,” Media General president and CEO Marshall Morton said in a statement. “We are delighted that our two most experienced broadcast executives will lead our television operations.” Read more

Samara Sodos Leaving WFLA: ‘I Was Looking for a Career That Felt a Little More Stable’

Reporter Samara Sodos is leaving WFLA after 12 years at the Tampa NBC-affiliate to join the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office as a public information officer.

“I was looking for a career that felt a little more stable,” Sodos told Eric Deggans of the Tampa Bay Times. “I feel like all the skills I learned in this job will help me there.”

Sodos joined the station in 2000 from WSLS in Roanoke, where she was a reporter, anchor and producer. She began her career as an associate producer for WTMJ in Milawaukee. Her last day at WFLA will be September 7. Read more

Longtime WFLA Anchor Bill Ratliff Dies

Longtime WFLA anchor Bill Ratliff passed away this afternoon. The Tampa NBC-affiliate reports that he died after complications with surgery.

Ratliff worked at WFLA for nearly three decades, from 1982 to 2009, during which time he anchored the station’s morning newscast and also served as the show’s managing editor.

Before joining WFLA, Ratliff worked at WFAA in Dallas, WDIV in Detroit, and WLWT in Cincinnati, among other places.

“Our NewsChannel 8 family is deeply saddened today by the loss of our dear friend Bill Ratliff,” veteran WFLA anchor Gayle Sierens wrote on her Facebook page.  “We will all miss him so.” Read more

VIDEO: Cars Crash During WFLA Live Shot

WFLA‘s Adrienne Pedersen was reporting live outside of a local gas station this morning when two cars collided behind her, spinning out of control through an intersection.

Although the screeching tires and metal crunch of the crash were clearly audible to viewers, Pedersen didn’t realize what had happened until anchor Gayle Guyardo pointed it out to her.

Pedersen was reporting on rising gas prices when the accident occurred.

Guyardo joked that the drivers were “probably shocked by the high gas prices” (video inside). Read more

Brad Moses Named President-GM of Tampa’s WFLA

Media General has named Brad Moses president and general manager of WFLA, the NBC-affiliate in Tampa. His appointment is effective March 26.

The move is a return to WFLA for Moses, who was director of marketing at the station from 2002-07. He joins WFLA from another Media General station, WNCN in Raleigh, where he has been vice president and general manager since 2009.

Moses replaces John Cottingham, who was named interim general manager of the station in November after Media General made several management changes at WFLA.

“I am pleased to bring such a talented broadcast professional back to our Tampa station,” Cottingham said in a statement. “His leadership abilities and his knowledge of the Tampa community will be very valuable to our customers and employees.”
