WHNT Hires Jason Simpson as Chief Meteorologist

Jason Simpson has been named WHNT‘s new chief meteorologist.

The Huntsville CBS-affiliate announced today that Simpson, who currently serves as the morning meteorologist at ABC 33/40 in Birmingham, will become the station’s lead weathercaster.

“Jason is an exceptional broadcast meteorologist and has outstanding severe weather tracking skills,” WHNT president and general manager Stan Pylant said, in announcing the move.  “We had a tremendous amount of interest from a lot of qualified candidates from all over the country.  In the end, the right person was right here in our own backyard.”

Simpson replaces Dan Satterfield, who recently departed WHNT after 17 years as chief meteorologist to “explore new opportunities.”

A north Alabama native, Simpson has been ABC 33/40′s morning meteorologist since 2004.  Before joining ABC 33/40, Simpson served as chief meteorologist for WTOK in Meridian, MS.

“My days in Birmingham have given me some great memories.  But, we are looking forward to settling our family in Huntsville,” Simpson, a new father, said.  “I have always respected WHNT.  I knew if I ever had the chance, I would take the opportunity to work there.”

Simpson raised his profile in Alabama earlier this year as ABC 33/40 provided in-depth coverage of the deadly tornadoes that swept through the state in April.
