How To Pitch:

This bold women's website wants personal stories with no holds barred

Background: The brainchild of Jane Pratt (founding editor of 90s teen magazine Sassy and, later, Jane), is an online magazine that showcases a range of diverse and unapologetically controversial points of view. It launched two and a half years ago and publishes first-person stories from women and men on such topics as struggles with online dating, opening up to a partner about your sexual orientation and challenging the latest trend in pop culture.

"The idea of the site was definitely for it to be written by a group of women with strong voices, strong personalities [and] strong opinions who are living what they are writing about," says Emily McCombs, executive editor. She adds that the advice comes straight from the writer's own experiences -- what she's wearing, what she's watching, what makeup she's wearing -- rather than quotes from experts on various topics.

Although it is reminiscent of Pratt's iconic print magazine, Jane, created in 1997 for women ages 18 to 35, isn't its online counterpart. "[Pratt], in conjunction with SAY Media, wanted to launch a web property for women of all ages. Initially, we launched with beauty, fashion, sex and love, sports and entertainment and DIY. We've added a few other categories since then."
