Background: For some vacationers, a resort is a perfectly pleasant, postcard-worthy place to spend a few days away from the stresses and responsibilities of their day-to-day lives. And that's fine. Still, for others, there's the more hands-on experience of juicing the place they're visiting for all it's worth -- interacting with the locals, going off the touristy trail to shop in real marketplaces, and eating indigenous, authentically prepared meals. Those globe-trotters are the prototypes of Afar readers.
Launched in August 2009, the pub celebrates experiential travel all over the globe, covering destinations abroad and in the U.S., with an in-depth perspective. "So many of the other magazines out there were focusing on sightseeing and escapist travel, where you just sort of ticked things off the list. We really felt like there were travelers out there who weren't being reached, who traveled to really connect with locals and come back with a deeper understanding of a place and its people," said editor-in-chief Julia Cosgrove.
