Course Details

In conjunction with the release of our first book, Get a Freelance Life: mediabistro.com's Insider Guide to Freelance Writing, we've gathered a panel of New York's most prolific freelance writers to share their practical tips for succeeding in a competitive field. This is the true story of freelancers who've been through the best and worst of times -- and thrived.

New York is full of writing opportunities for freelancers, but you need to know how to get the coveted assignments that everyone else wants. At this frank discussion, you can learn how to get assignments and how to find new outlets for your work. Whether you're on staff now but contemplating going solo or a current freelancer looking to give your career a boost, this panel is for you.

This panel will cover:

  • Freelance opportunities for writers in New York
  • How to establish relationships with editors when you have no connections
  • Coping with loneliness
  • Generating story ideas
  • Getting paid!!!

Panelists will include:

  • Joe Bargman, a 20-year writing veteran who wrote for Seventeen, Cosmo, Glamour, Golf for Women, The New York Times, and Esquire before becoming executive editor at Life & Style Weekly.
  • Cara Birnbaum, who worked for YM, Twist, Cosmopolitan, and Allure before becoming a full-time freelancer with work in Elle, O, Martha Stewart Living, InStyle, Redbook, Organic Style, and New Jersey Monthly. Her first book will be published this April.
  • Wendy Knight, an award-winning writer and editor who contributes to The New York Times, Outside, Shape, The Globe and Mail, and The Los Angeles Times. She also reports for Travel Snapshots on ABC News Now.
  • Liza Monroy, whose freelance work has been published in The New York Times, Newsweek, Village Voice, Time Out New York, and Modern Bride. She contributes to Shecky's and is a freelance fact-checker at Jane.
  • Precious Williams, who has written for the New York Post, Cosmo and the London Times. She is also a contributing editor at Elle (UK). Her freelance work has appeared in The Times, New York, Glamour, Marie Claire, The Daily Telegraph and Details.
