Course Details

In an industry with more magazines than you can count, how does one put together the strongest portfolio to land freelance work? And how do you go about getting your portfolio to the people who can hire you?

In this one-night portfolio review session, limited to 12 students, you'll have a chance to have your book critiqued and edited as much as necessary to create a tight, well-paced representation of you. Former magazine editor Caren Alpert will help focus and direct you toward the best places to make your pitch for work.

You will pick up important tips, a fresh eye, and a new perspective on your own work. You will also understand how to edit yourself, how to seek advice from friends and family, and what photo editors are looking for when they review portfolios.

Admission Requirements:
Please submit a brief letter of interest that includes a work history, as well as three images from your portfolio.

Students selected for the portfolio review will have the opportunity to present a portfolio of up to 20 images, in print form only (no 35mm or 2-1/4 chrome). Laser prints are acceptable.

Testimonials

Caren is a great presenter, full of enthusiasm and positive energy. She has in-depth working knowledge both as a photo editor and a photographer, enabling her to explain the creative process from both angles. I particularly appreciated Caren's personal touch, the time she took after class late in the evening to look at my portfolio and offer great honest feedback and advice. She happily stayed an extra hour just for us - until 11 p.m.! This seminar was packed with useful information, and I will apply it immediately. -- Nicolo Sertorio, freelance photographer, www.PhotoNicolo.com

"Caren Alpert shared her experiences as a working photographer for well-known magazines in an extremely candid manner and was very valuable to my career. She dispelled myths and shared insider information of the sometimes puzzling and intimidating world of editorial and advertising photography. This is a class emerging photographers should take for themselves and for each other." -- Shanenon Starrett, freelance photographer, S2 Photography

"I left [the Breaking Into Editorial Photography seminar] with so much information and a new enthusiasm for this industry. Caren is beyond articulate, knowledgeable, and patient. She is a wonderful teacher." -- Tiffany Weigel, photographer, Tiffany Weigel Photo

"Packed with the most valuable information of all - the business and marketing of editorial photography. Caren knows her field inside and out and delivers the material in a way that keeps it interesting and engaging." -- Christine Krieg

"I would highly recomend this class to anyone intrested in getting into editorial photography. Caren Alpert shares not only her insights but also has copies of forms and contracts that you will need to know to become a professional. She also tells you what pitfalls to beware of concerning your rights as a photographer." -- Ruby Rieke
