Everywhere you look, comic concepts and characters are part of our cultural landscape. As modern mythology, comics fuel the blockbuster media hits of our age. But how do you get started as a writer in the exciting and lucrative comics and graphic novel business?

It all starts with an idea:
  • An infant from beyond the stars, the sole survivor of a doomed planet, is rocketed to Smallville, Kansas, and there becomes a super-powered hero on his adopted world. (Superman)
  • A teenager bitten by an irradiated spider is granted incredible arachnid powers, uses them selfishly, only to tragically learn that with great power there must also come great responsibility. (Spider-Man)
  • A holocaust survivor's adult son tries to come to terms with his relationship with his father by interpreting the older man's tales of horror and endurance into a graphic novel where the deadly serious subject matter is related through the use of "funny animals." (Maus)
Maybe you have a great idea for a new graphic novel concept, or a fantastic story in mind for an established character. But how do you get the idea from your head onto paper and into print and beyond? And if you don't have concrete ideas bubbling around in your brain, how do you "prime the pump" to come up with ideas in the first place?

In this seminar, noted comics writer, editor and educator Danny "Spider-Man" Fingeroth will teach you how to devise and develop your ideas and characters. He'll show you how to flesh them out -- or pare them down -- and make your vision come alive.

In this 3-hour seminar, you can expect to learn:
  • How to organize character bits and random scenes into stories
  • How to find creative inspiration
  • How to avoid the five fatal flaws of beginning graphic novel writers
  • How to build a theme into your story without being didactic or moralizing
  • How to get your work in front of an editor
  • How to use comics writing skills in movies, TV, or novels
  • How to network with artists who can help you realize your vision

(No drawing skills required.)
