In conjunction with the release of our first book, Get a Freelance Life: mediabistro.com's Insider Guide to Freelance Writing, we've gathered a panel of Miami's most prolific freelance writers to share their practical tips for succeeding in a competitive field. This is the true story of freelancers who've been through the best and worst of times -- and thrived.
At this frank discussion, you can learn how to get assignments and how to find new outlets for your work. Whether you're on staff now but contemplating going solo or a current freelancer looking to give your career a boost, this panel is for you.
This panel will cover:
- Freelance opportunities for writers in Miami
- How to establish relationships with editors when you have no connections
- Coping with loneliness
- Generating story ideas
- Getting paid!!!
Panelists will include:
- Cathleen Farrell, Editorial Director of Page One Media, which includes Poder, Hispanic, Tu Dinero, and Hispanic Trends magazines, published in Miami. She served as Time's correspondent in Colombia, where she worked as a freelancer for eight years. For the past five years she has worked as editor of Poder magazine, serving the Latin American and Hispanic markets.
- Ruth Morris, who began her career working for Reuters in Washington D.C. before moving to Colombia to freelance for TIME magazine, the Los Angeles Times, and the BBC. She has also been on assignment to the Middle East and Havana.
- Juan Tamayo, the Miami Herald's Chief of Correspondents since 2003. He worked as a foreign correspondent for the Herald for more than 20 years, and covered some of the most relevant stories of our times in Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.
