Course Details

One of the perks of being a writer is seeing your byline in magazines your friends can pick up at the newsstand. What does it take to get your byline into one of the thousands of consumer magazines? While it's not as hard as you might think, breaking into the glossies does require specific knowledge about how the magazine world works and an understanding of the strategies that will get you published.

This class provides a crash course in how to penetrate the world of the glossies, whether you're coming from a background in trade writing, newspapers, or are still dreaming of seeing your name in print for the first time. You'll learn about 12 secrets of breaking into the big leagues, the opportunities out there, how to get editors' attention with a beautifully crafted pitch letter, how to sell yourself and your writing, and how to write to please. You'll find out how to study the magazine market, break into new publications, and win an editor's loyalty (which translates into repeat assignments). We'll take you beyond the basics and give you a seller's edge.

In this seminar you can expect to learn:

  • The basics of breaking into freelance magazine journalism
  • Tips on how to get published clips
  • How to generate fresh story ideas
  • How to compose a winning pitch
  • How to connect with editors
  • How to make an editor happy with your work
