Course Details
Journalists in Iraq and the Middle East have been the conduits of information for the global public. At times putting their lives at risk in order to get the story, they have been charged with making sense of reports from local Iraqi sources and soldiers -- two populations under great duress and with unclear agendas. At home, they've been at the crossfire of a public who wants to see inside a war and politicians whose survival depends on perceptions of the conflict. Above all, their goal has been to break news.
How do reporters balance this pursuit of information?
In this frank discussion, journalists discuss their experiences covering the war and the careers that led them there. They'll also offer their views of the media coverage itself and their prospects for hope.
Speakers include: --Rajiv Chandrasekaran, former Washington Post Baghdad bureau chief and author of Imperial Life in Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone --Paul McLeary, staff writer at the Columbia Journalism Review; spent a month in Iraq in January 2006 embedded with the 2nd Marine Division in Fallujah and wrote a series of articles for CJR's Web site; writing has appeared in New York Observer, San Francisco Chronicle, Salon, and The Center for American Progress. --Brian Palmer, an independent journalist and filmmaker making a documentary currently titled Full Disclosure based on three embeds in Iraq with a US Marine infantry battalion. --Joshua Partlow, staff writer for The Washington Post, where he has written extensively about Iraq. --Walter Rodgers, former senior international correspondent for CNN; during 2003's Operation Iraqi Freedom, Rodgers was one of CNN's 18 embedded journalists; author of Sleeping With Custer and the 7th Cavalry: An Embedded Reporter in Iraq. --Manoush Zomorodi (moderator), international producer and reporter for BBC television and radio
