Course Details

Your grandmother just emailed you, and your 4-year old nephew can use an iPod. Technology is no longer just for geeks. But are publishers meeting the needs of general audiences?

From WiFi to BlackBerrys, people not only buy and use technology every day, but are also looking for technology information that doesn't boggle the mind.

Technology's move to the mainstream has been happening for more than a decade, yet general interest/lifestyle media publishers and editors have been slow to address this important aspect of everyday life. The dilemma for publishers is clear: how do they offer information about technology in a way that engages new readers but doesn't put off their core audiences?

Yahoo! Tech
and mediabistro.com have teamed up to answer these questions:

  • What kind of tech information works for general audiences and what doesn't?
  • How much is too much for general audiences when it comes to information about technology?
  • How should publishers and editors of outlets with a core female audience view male and female audiences differently on the subject of personal technology?
How can editorial features be developed to reflect the way men and women approach technology (common wisdom holds that men want the latest and greatest; women want quality products regardless of the "hot" factor)?
  • Will DIY tech tips or gadget information ever gain the same prominence in lifestyle publications as other life topics (beauty, health, relationships, fashion, etc)?

Moderated by: Patrick Houston, VP of Programming, Yahoo! Lifestyles
