Course Details

Everybody has a story to tell, but some people make a living sharing theirs. How do they do it? This three-hour seminar divulges the secrets. In addition to learning good craft techniques -- such as character development, narrative arcs, and description -- you'll delve into the business. We'll discuss strategies for finding an agent, drawing up a first-rate book proposal, and promoting your work (including paid speaking gigs). We'll also debate some of the ethical dilemmas inherent in this business, such as when to use a pen name and when to call a lawyer.

In this seminar, you'll learn how to:

  • Mine your memories for material
  • Write with the finesse of fiction
  • Engage in guerrilla marketing techniques
  • Find grants and residencies to help support your work
