Course Details

This class will employ forms found in prose and poetry to enhance skill. Writers will practice finding the pleasure of practice, gaining skill in composing at will and on command, ignoring the walls that many academics have placed between genres -- fiction, non-fiction, poetry -- seeking instead to restore the way in which they inform each other. Here form invents a place where writers come to rest, concentrate their practice, and discover language's musical possibility. Here practice becomes generative, each exercise generating more skill.

This course is suitable to the fledgling writer and the working journalist seeking to explore creative literary alternatives. Weekly exercises are utilized and expected.

Admission Requirements:
Please send a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and a writing sample (less than 2,000 words).

Testimonials

It was a really great class. The participants were all smart and enthusiastic about writing. Jackson Taylor has talent! The best writing teacher I have had since college... I loved this seminar! -- Wanda Castillo

"I have taken many writing workshops in the past but none like Jackson Taylor's. His was the first writing class that actually broke down the rhetoric of writing. In the workshop, we analyzed the language of good and bad writing, practiced aphorisms and read countless pieces of text. The writing exercises he assigned help me break into the core of the novel I had been struggling to tell. Before Jackson, my writing was flat and had no direction, but now thanks to him I nearly have a completed manuscript. I highly recommend this workshop." -- Sadeqa Johnson , Novelist
