Course Details

In this class, you will learn the essentials of television news reporting, including story structure, writing for TV, the art of the interview, and mastering the liveshot. With careful examination of what works and what doesn't, youwill develop a solid foundation in the skills used by the best reporters on television.

Each week, we will study how experienced reporters handle a story while you work on your own tv news assignments. After 4 weeks, you'll know exactly how to approach any story, from breaking news to features.

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to write a crisp, compelling script
  • How to "write to video"
  • How to conduct interviews for television (and how to salvage even the worst interview subjects)
  • Pacing and organizing for even the most complicated story
  • Why some liveshots work, and others don't
  • How to survive technical meltdowns and other disasters
  • Some of the best tips and tricks from an experienced working reporter

By the end of class, you will have:
Written and edited your own news scripts and learned how to move quickly from assignment to a script ready to cut, edit, and get on the air.

Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).

The online classroom has several interactive components:

  • Instructors post lectures once a week. You can read them online, print them, or download them at your convenience.
  • Students post completed assignments for feedback and discussion by the instructor and class.
  • Weekly chats allow your class to get together via instant message. Transcripts are available for review if you can't attend.
  • Technical support is available from mediabistro staff.

Mark Joyella
Mark Joyella is an Emmy-winning reporter who's covered stories across the country and around the world. He is at WPLG-TV in Miami, and prior to that was a reporter and anchor at WNYW-TV in New York City.

Mark began his career at KJCT-TV in Grand Junction, Colorado, and has reported and anchored at stations in Savannah, Birmingham, Tampa and New York City. Along the way, Mark has reported as hurricanes made landfall, as American troops deployed to the Persian Gulf, and at the scenes of major events in the U.S., the Caribbean, and throughout Central and South America.

Mark's writing and reporting have been honored with five Emmy Awards. He has been honored twice by the Associated Press, and his live reporting during Hurricane Andrew earned him a Spot News award from the Radio-Television News Directors' Association. Aside from his daily reporting duties, Mark produces and directs documentary films.
