Course Details

To make it as a writer in New York, you have to understand how this complex, crazy city works. That's the only way to get bureaucrats and other people in charge to return your calls. Even more important, these folks make great sources for endless story ideas if you can connect with them. Figuring this all out can be a major headache, but this seminar will give you an insider's guide to finding the fresh, off-beat stories that editors love and will help build your rep in a crowded field.

In this seminar, you will learn:

  • How to beat other writers to that new and original story idea
  • How to develop sources and get people to talk to you
  • Where to go for information
  • The traps of New York stories and how to avoid them
  • How to get published in local New York publications
  • How to get a ride in the back of an NYPD squad car -- without landing there in handcuffs

Testimonials

The class was excellent! All of the students had 3 minutes to experience what it's like to be interviewed by the press. After the rest of the class had conducted interviews as member of the press corps, we began to better understand how to formulate questions, how to follow up on hints the interviewee might be throwing out, and how to ask hard questions. Jane Greer

"Betty Ming Liu was great! She immediately set the class at ease, was well-organized, used every second of our four hours together efficiently and effectively! Betty was generous with her feedback, encouragement and constructive comments. Course content was as expected, as described. Timing was perfect. Walked away energized and looking forward to next interview." -- Susan Sawyers

"Betty Ming Liu was a smart, informed journalist who made this info-packed seminar really fun, interesting, and totally helped me feel more confident in my interviewing skills." -- Anna Davies
