Course Details

Breaking into PR can be a long process -- years of college often followed by tedious internships, assistantships, and other administrative positions before you're given an opportunity to do "real" PR work. This is particularly true in competitive cities like DC. With employment of public relations specialists expected to grow by 18 percent in the next 10 years, now is the time to break in -- especially in Washington, DC, the fastest growing PR market.

Experience is a great teacher, but there is a reason why learning from your mistakes is called "the hard way." If you're tired of learning things the hard way (or of not learning at all), then attend this course for entry-level or aspiring PR professionals.

In this seminar you'll learn:

  • How to find a good PR job and how to move up the ladder
  • How to write powerful press releases and pitch letters
  • How to create news the media can use
  • How to harness the tools of the trade: e.g., surveys, media tours, matte releases, and special events
  • How to make hay with old media, print, and broadcast
  • How to make points with the new media: online press, blogs, podcasts, and social sites
  • How to go beyond media PR: crisis communications, issues management, etc

Barbara Martin
Barbara Martin is the director of BdMedia, a division of The Patton Group, a public relations, events, and marketing firm headquartered in Miami with offices in Washington DC, Denver, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Barbara served as the corporate marketing director for the events division of Nielsen for eight years, managing the direct response marketing, advertising, and public relations for b-to-b events ranging in size from 400 to 40,000. After tiring of firing public relations firms who couldn't deliver ROI-based results, she started her own. Focusing in the luxury lifestyle market, her company's Washington clients include boutiques, jewelry stores, salons, and luxury real estate properties. She is also a founder of the District Sample Sale, a fashion charity event that benefits women's and children's charities throughout the Washington region.
