Course Details

This class focuses on the career paths open to aspiring fashion writers, market editors, and PR consultants. You'll learn about the inner workings of the fashion industry, including publications, websites, and marketing firms. You'll get the inside scoop on the variety of jobs available to you at every level, and how to break in and succeed as a professional. Armed with detailed job descriptions and successful role models, you will be truly inspired and informed when you decide which career path is best suited to your skills and interests.

Throughout the class you will work on your portfolio to gather spec work and generate ideas for pitches. You'll find out how use the web to present yourself at every experience level. You'll also learn how to translate your writing and ideas to various forms of print publishing and fashion consulting.

In this class, you will learn:

  • The differences between visual editors, section editors, photo production editors, and writers at magazines and newspapers
  • The job descriptions, average salaries, and daily responsibilities at each post
  • How and where you can break into the industry without experience
  • The advantages of starting out as a freelancer
  • The strategies and secrets of fashion public relations and marketing
  • How a fashion magazine is produced each month from cover shoot to page layout
  • How to become an effective and interesting fashion writer for various print and online formats
  • The kind of people who succeed, excel, and network in the industry

By the end of this class, you will have:
A concrete plan and path for a career in fashion media, a portfolio of work, and a list of target publications and companies.

Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).

The online classroom has several interactive components:

  • Instructors post lectures once a week. You can read them online, print them, or download them at your convenience.
  • Students post completed assignments for feedback and discussion by the instructor and class.
  • Weekly chats allow your class to get together via instant message. Transcripts are available for review if you can't attend.

Elyssa Dimant
Elyssa Dimant is a fashion historian and writer living in New York City. A former curatorial assistant at The Costume Institute, Elyssa now works as a creative manager at the fashion marketing and communications firm Lividini Weisenfeld Partners. Elyssa co-curated the Metropolitan Museum's WILD: Fashion Untamed exhibition and co-authored the accompanying catalogue of the same name (Yale University Press, 2004). She additionally authored Fashioning Fabrics: Contemporary Textiles in Fashion (Black Dog, 2006), and has contributed to various publications, including Elle Canada, Dec Arts Magazine, Vogue, Selvedge, Zink, and CITY magazine, for which she is a regular fashion columnist. Elyssa is also an adjunct professor at The New School/Parsons School of Design, and a guest lecturer at the School for Visual Arts.
