Is it your dream to work for The New York Times online? Wish you could add your commentary to Slate.com? Do you want to break news on your blog? Or maybe you just want to keep your writing skills up to date. With all the changes in the journalism business amid declining newspaper circulation, there's a booming market for online news writing. This class will give you the skills you need to break in.

With today's burgeoning blogosphere, it takes more than a news tip and a timely hook to attract the attention of web readers -- and web editors. Clear, searchable copy, catchy headlines, and interactive content can set you apart from the crop of aspiring citizen journalists.

In this class you will learn:

  • The basics of online news writing
  • What makes online writing different from other mediums
  • How to write stories that captivate readers
  • Ways to break news in the fast-paced, crowded online news environment
  • How to advance your career to the next level and get the job you want

Each week you'll complete homework assignments designed to make you a savvy online news writer.

By the end of the class you will have:
The knowledge you need to get that dream job in online news, and a polished pitch letter to get your story on the web.

Admission Requirements:
Students should have experience with broadcast or print journalism. Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).

The online classroom has several interactive components:

  • Instructors post lectures once a week. You can read them online, print them, or download them at your convenience.
  • Students post completed assignments for feedback and discussion by the instructor and class.
  • Weekly chats allow your class to get together via instant message. Transcripts are available for review if you can't attend.
  • Technical support is available from mediabistro staff.
