Course Details

New York is a city filled with publications looking for new work. The New York Times, the Daily News, Newsday, and the New York Post publish freelance essays daily. There are also opportunities for publication in The Village Voice, The New York Observer, amNewYork, and Metro. The personal essay is becoming the new basic feature. Thanks to the growing market for memoirs, first-person pieces, and blogs, there's more demand than ever for stories told from the perspective of intimate experience.

All the dailies and many magazines regularly publish essays from freelancers, making this format a great way to break into your outlet of choice. Learn how to take your basic idea, shape it into a killer essay and then, sell it. The process will involve reporting and writing tricks that you can later apply to anything you work on.

In this five-week workshop, a former nationally syndicated New York Daily News columnist will help you get comfortable with both revealing yourself on the page and packaging yourself as a distinctive product. Expect lots of supportive feedback and a safe place to develop your voice.

By the end of this class, students will have:
At least two sellable first-person pieces ready to submit to NYC publications.

Admission Requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).
