Course Details

Many magazines these days are packing their pages with more and more quick takes, deep captions and ever shorter articles. Yes, it's tough to land longer, meaty narrative assignments. But the long-form story (anything over 2,500 words) is still in demand, and this intensive 8-session class will show you how to write it, pitch it and land a contract. Over the course of the workshop, each student will focus on shaping one non-fiction article between 2,500 and 4,000 words. And after whipping your piece into shape as a group, we'll help you sell it to the right publication.

In this class you'll learn how to:

  • Pick a topic worthy of deep exploration
  • Angle your article to capture an editor's attention
  • Build a story structure that will keep readers focused
  • Capitalize on your reporting skills and mastery of the subject
  • Hone your distinctive style and bring your voice to the page

By the end of this class, you will have:
A magazine-ready 2,500-4,000 word narrative.

Admission Requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and a writing sample (less than 2,000 words).
