This class will teach you the skills needed to successfully get your foot in the door of the fashion magazine world by providing insight into the inner workings of the fashion editorial world, the different styles of fashion publications on the newsstand, and a working knowledge of the fashion design industry. Throughout class, you will work on creating a folio of spec clips that exhibit an ability to analyze and report on fashion as a craft -- not just as trends -- while learning about forecast and trend reporting that will get you the best assignments. You will learn how to create a network of contacts, idea books, and mood boards, as well as the ins and outs of getting invitations and securing interviews from designers and PR departments.

A guest professional fashion editor will participate in some online chats.

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to create a portfolio of work and generate buzz
  • The differences between staff fashion reporters, fashion writers, and freelancers -- how you can break in first as a freelancer and develop a history
  • How you can generate ideas, get assignments, and get published
  • Knowledge of fashion history: how to watch shows, interpret collections, and develop an eye and knowledge of design inspiration
  • How to generate ideas for fashion and trends through film, celebrities, books, art, and popular culture
  • How to use personal style to create stories that fashion editors crave
  • How to write everything from fashion credits to the start of a fashion feature
  • Tips to get past PR gatekeepers to get interviews with designers and celebrities

By the end of class students can expect to have:
A folio of spec clips including 5-6 fashion articles, heds and deks written for a high fashion magazine, and the beginnings of a mood board/idea page or book to track fashion trends and position stories

Admission Requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).

The online classroom has several interactive components:

  • Instructors post lectures once a week. You can read them online, print them, or download them at your convenience.
  • Students post completed assignments for feedback and discussion by the instructor and class.
  • Weekly chats allow your class to get together via instant message. Transcripts are available for review if you can't attend.
  • Technical support is available from mediabistro staff.
