You're a great reporter and a great writer, right? Too bad the last dozen journalism job postings you found required knowledge of Flash. Fret not. This class is your answer, even if you shiver at the mention of any software application other than Word.

In one weekend, learn how to use Adobe Flash to create interactive widgets -- slideshows, maps, quizzes, and more -- without having to learn too much of the geeky technical stuff. On the first day, you'll get an introduction to Flash basics -- you'll learn how to use the timeline, the tools bar, and the stage. You'll create simple animations and slideshows. On the second day, we'll cover more complex interactives using the drawing tools in Flash, as well as images created in Photoshop. You'll do yourself very proud.

By the end of class, you will have:
A basic understanding of Flash and the ability to create real, newsroom-worthy interactive widgets.

Publishing a personal essay can put you on the fast track to getting an agent or even a book deal for your memoir. A series of essays often produces a theme, and this theme is often linked to a period of our lives that we'd really like to write about. But how do we get from A to Z?

In this class, you'll learn how to use a personal essay -- or a series of personal essays -- to structure a memoir with a beginning, a middle, and an end. This class will provide a stimulating, supportive environment where you can workshop your memoir-in-progress and receive invaluable feedback.

In this class, you will learn:

How to connect to the genuine emotion in your work

How to create an architecture or arc to your story

How to edit and refine your work to make it as strong as possible

How to approach literary agents with your book proposal

Why (and how) you can sell a memoir before you have finished writing it

By the end of this class, you will have:
A fully planned outline for a memoir, an annotated table of contents, a sample chapter, and the passion and confidence to approach literary agents and editors.

Admission Requirements:
Please send a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and a writing sample (less than 2,000 words).

Online content is here to stay, but so are magazines. Not that long ago, putting a magazine online just meant uploading previously published articles and inserting a couple of links. Those days are gone.

Online audiences are demanding and fickle. In order to compete with online media, stay relevant, and extend their brands and readerships (online and off), magazine sites are increasingly investing in new technology. They're creating web-exclusive content, and integrating their print and online brands more imaginatively (think Lucky).

In this 6-week course you'll learn the essentials of creating successful magazine sites and what that means for print magazine writers and editors.

In this class, you will learn:

How to be a great writer/editor for magazine web sites

Where the role of editor ends and producer begins

How to webify magazine articles, including pitfalls to avoid

Which new web technologies have become an expected and integral part of web content, and how to develop them

The importance of user-generated content -- when and how to encourage it, how and why to use it

How to evaluate, identify, and incorporate potential content partnerships

Aspiring authors often spend as much time worrying about getting representation as they do writing their books. The truth is, there are scores of agents out there, and landing one is nowhere near as hard as it seems -- even if you have no publishing connections. In this seminar, you'll learn how to find the perfect agent for your novel, how to know when your book is ready to send out, and how to write a professional-sounding query letter. We'll also discuss the do's and don'ts for dealing with agents, and what you can realistically expect when you sell a book.

In this seminar, you will learn:

How to find agents who specialize in books like yours

The five-second tweak that will make your query letter sing

How being rejected by one agent can make you more desirable to others

What an agent will and won't do for you

Why a huge advance isn't always a good thing

In today's extremely competitive marketplace -- whether you are pitching an idea for a novel, short story, TV show, film, stand-up comedy act, or internet-based web show -- you need to make an impression and stand out. The clearest, quickest way to do that is to create your own brand.

What kind of impression do you give as you present yourself and your work in a cold calling situation, through email, or as you walk into a pitch meeting? What do people remember most about you after they've met you? What element of your personality will separate you from your competition? How do you want to be known? What is your energy? How will you and your art be perceived? What is your own personal brand?

Answer these questions and you'll be a success. This class will explore the success of popular personal brands (think Rachael Ray, Oprah, and JK Rowling.) Through lectures, exercises, and chats, you will develop a complete brand portfolio.

In this course you will learn:

The complete definition of branding

How to understand the marketplace you'll be pitching within

How to adjust your brand for a variety of media and cultural situations

How to find the right brand energy for you and your work

What you need for a complete brand package, from business cards to web presence

By the end of this class, you will have:
A complete portfolio displaying your own brilliant, unique brand

The online classroom has several interactive components:

Instructors post lectures once a week. You can read them online, print them, or download them at your convenience.

Students post completed assignments for feedback and discussion by the instructor and class.

Weekly chats allow your class to get together via instant message. Transcripts are available for review if you can't attend.

Technical support is available from mediabistro staff.
