Background: According to most media reports, the African-American community is in a state of utter crisis with rampant unemployment, black-on-black crime and too many single-parent households. While each is a legitimate concern, Brett Wright and Len Burnett knew that there is also a segment of the black population that is successful and thriving. In 2004, they created UPTOWN to celebrate that group.
Isoul Harris, UPTOWN's newest editor-in-chief acknowledges that much of the coverage is the same amongst all of the African-American monthlies, but he believes that UPTOWN has a uniquely stylish perspective. With a careful eye toward aesthetics, the book is beautiful enough to take up residence on readers' coffee tables -- right next to the illustrated history of Obama's first Presidential term.
