WaPo's Online Editor Steps Down

Jim Brady will step down from his position as executive editor of WashingtonPost.com after Inauguration Day. Brady started at the site in 1995 as sports editor before decamping to America Online. He returned four years ago to head the online newsroom, which will merge with the print newsroom next year and could result in a decrease in power for the Web boss. Brady said he is "beat up, tired, burned out," and that the decision was entirely his call. D.C. insiders are already speculating about his replacement, with Liz Spayd's name being tossed around...

Could the rumors of the magazine industry's death be exaggerated? Well, no, but 335 new magazines did launch in 2008. That number was down 13 percent from the previous year, and most were niche titles... Wenner Media put its Us Weekly spinoff, Us Style, on hold until the fall of 2009. The magazine was scheduled to publish quarterly starting this spring...

It looks more and more like Chris Matthews won't run for Senate after all. Steve Capus, for one, doesn't think he will... Aurelia Grayson jumped from The Early Show to senior broadcast producer of the NBC Nightly News... Ray Ban, the perfectly-named EVP of programming and meteorology at The Weather Channel, is retiring...

In a twist worthy of The Wire, The Baltimore Sun's editor Timothy A. Franklin leaves the paper to teach at the Indiana University School of Journalism. Montgomery Cook, currently the director of content development, will replace Franklin... Congressional Quarterly hired a couple staffers...

The Journal Register Co. shuttered 16 newspapers in the Connecticut area. Twenty-one people lost their jobs... The Seattle Times told 500 staffers they would be taking a mandatory week off without pay sometime between now and February. Expect the paper to take more drastic cost-cutting measures in the near future as it struggles to avoid yet another round of layoffs... One solution to the Internet problem for newspapers: ignore it entirely. This is the strategy of New Jersey-based TriCityNews, which is thriving with no Web presence...

Frank Gehry has been forced to lay off the design staff working on the Atlantic Yards project in light of Bruce Ratner's decision to put it on hold... Brad Kay takes over the top spot at SS+K... And there are changes at CNN, Sunset, Grand Central Publishing, Inside Congress, and more...
